South Dennis – Mary Jane (Martin) McAdoo, 99, of Yarmouthport, passed away peacefully at the Eagle Pond Rehabilitation Center on February 19, 2011. She was the wife of the late Clarence McAdoo who passed away in 1970.
Born in Philadelphia, PA on May 10, 1911, Mary Jane was the daughter of the late Edward and Anna (Schott) Martin.
“Jinner”, as her family fondly called her, grew up in Maryland as the youngest of three girls moving many times as family situations changed. She eventually made her home in Baltimore working for Western Electric. Jane was a very astute business woman and became the assistant to the CEO before retiring. She left Baltimore and moved to Scottsdale, AZ where she married her beloved “Mac”, after working many years for him. They shared a brief but very happy time together.
After the passing of her husband, Jinner moved to East Liverpool, OH for several years to live with her sister Doris, who was also a widow. In 1973, they moved to Barnstable on Cape Cod. Jinner was very creative and had many interests including painting, knitting, needlepoint, reading and crossword puzzles. She volunteered for many years at the Museum of Natural History in Brewster. She was also an avid birdwatcher and helped each year with the shore bird count.
In 1992, Jinner moved to Heatherwood in Yarmouthport. During her 18 years there, she made many wonderful friends and enjoyed a very active social life. As part of her daily routine, she could be found in the exercise room and often in the game room playing cards, scrabble or dominoes.
Jinner leaves behind four nieces, Mary Jane Jones of Los Angeles, CA, Susie O’Brien and husband Robert of Barnstable, MA, Cynthia Triedman and husband Leonard of Narragansett, RI and Hilton Head, SC, Lesley Anne Hartmann of Baltimore, MD and a nephew Carvel Lucas and his wife Jo of Columbia, MD. She is also survived by 17 grandnieces and grandnephews.
Jinner will be sadly missed by all her loving family, and was considered in her later years as the “matriarch”. Although small in stature, she had an incredible inner strength that carried her through a fulfilling long life.
There are no scheduled visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday February 23, 2011 at 10am at St. Francis Xavier Church, South St., Hyannis. Interment will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod, 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601.
