Patricia C. Scherer, 88, of Centerville, passed away on March 11, 2017. Patricia was born in South Bend, IN, the daughter of the late William Condon and Matilda Roberts Condon. She had four brothers, all now deceased, one of whom was a pilot of a B-17 Bomber shot down over Germany in WWII. He did not survived and is buried at the United States Cemetery, Margratan, Netherlands. Patricia attended Catholic Schools in South Bend and then graduated from Saint Francis School of Nursing in Evanston, IL. After graduation, she became an RN in Illinois.
She married Jerry Ludwig in 1951 and they had five children: James, John, Joseph, Jeffrey, and Jean (Ransdell). They divorced in 1971. They had lived in a number of places in the Chicago area. She worked for the ITE Imperial Company in Niles, IL as an Industrial Nurse. She received a Certificate in Industrial Hearing Conservation from Northwester University and a Certificate in Occupational Heath for Nursing from New York University.
She married Harold N. Scherer, Jr. in 1974 and moved to New Jersey where she went to work as an RN at the Summit Medical Group in Summit, NJ. After taking a number of courses, she was promoted to Nurse Practitioner, one of the early such Practitioners in NJ. She then worked for a group of three surgeons at the Summit Group.
All her children are living and they live in Illinois for James, John, and Joseph, New Jersey for Jeffery and Arizona for Jean. Her two step-children, Anne McConnell and Peter Scherer live in Florida and New York.
She moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1981 when her husband's company moved its headquarters to Columbus. In Columbus, she worked as a volunteer for a number of organizations including the local hospital and the local Opera Company. She took an intensive course in Zoology at the Columbus Zoo and then worked as a Docent at the Zoo, working for Jack Hanna who was then the Director of the Zoo. She specialized in gorillas.
Since Patricia's husband was involved in a number of National and International activities, she traveled extensively with him visiting most of the United States and Western Europe. She spent many nights in Paris and visited many parts of the city. India and the Taj Mahal were also highlights of her travel.
In particular, she enjoyed her trip to the former Soviet Union including Moscow, Tashkent, Samarkand, and Dushandbe. Another high spot was a visit to China, including Beijing, Xian and the River Li. In Xian she saw the hundreds of terra cotta soldiers who were buried to protect their emperor. She even met the farmer who, some 20 years before, had dug up the terra cotta soldier head that lead to the excavations. In Egypt she saw the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx and then the Great Dam at Aswan and the Valley of the Kings, near Luxor.
In 1990 she moved, with her husband, to Cape Cod and has lived their ever since. She had a taste of a somewhat similar area when she and her husband owned a condominium vacation apartment in Saugatuck, MI and enjoyed boating on Lake Kalamazoo and Lake Michigan and the beaches on Lake Michigan. Arrangements are under the care of Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, Hyannis. Services will be announced at a later date. For online condolences, please visit www.doanebealames.com.
