

Peter Maniates, 85, of West Yarmouth, MA and formerly of Peabody, MA passed away early Thursday morning, November 5, at the McCarthy Center in East Sandwich. His wife Penelope, and daughter Valerie, were by his side constantly throughout his recent illness.
Peter was born on November, 23, 1929, the son of George (Xideas) Maniates and Iphiyenia (Papagalamus) Maniates, in Boston, MA. He married Penelope Terzis of Lynn, MA on November 3, 1957, and the two have enjoyed a marriage of mutual love and devotion for the past 58 years. They raised their two children, Christopher and Valerie, in Peabody and later retired in West Yarmouth.
Peter was a steadfast role model for his family, particularly to his 5 grandchildren, demonstrating his strong character, integrity, generosity, faith, and love of family over many decades. He was an avid Boston sports fan, and enjoyed sailing, golf, and bowling with family and friends. He also enjoyed gardening at his home in West Yarmouth.
Peter served in the National Guard, and later the US Coast Guard from 1949 to 1952. He survived a major naval accident while serving as an engine room mechanic aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Eastwind, in which 13 crew members perished in the icy Atlantic waters following a collision in heavy fog. He was hospitalized for more than a year, but fully recovered, demonstrating his fighting spirit, which emerged often throughout his entire lifetime.
Prior to his retirement in 1991, Peter was employed by the Raytheon Company for 24 years and was often recognized for his achievements. He would often speak proudly of his tenure as a Quality Manager for the manufacture of the Hawk and Patriot Missile systems in Andover, and maintained friendships with many colleagues and employees well into his retirement years.
Mr. Maniates is survived by his wife of 58 years, Penelope, his two children: Valerie Molnar, and her husband Randy, of Anthem, AZ and Christopher Maniates, and his wife Judy, of Peabody ; 5 grandchildren: Michael Molnar (and wife Danielle), Eric Molnar (and wife Alexis), Melanie Molnar, Christopher Maniates , and David Maniates; and 2 great-grandchildren: Dominic Molnar and Addison Molnar. He is also survived by his sister, Presbytera Emily Harakas of Spring Hill, FL, his step-sister Mrs. Helen (Phillips) Castle of Michigan. and step-brother Mr. Tom Phillips of Weston. He was predeceased by his sisters Mrs. Katherine (Maniates) Gregerson and Mrs. Mary (Maniates) Stameris, and brother Mr. Paul Maniates.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 11:00 am at St George Greek Orthodox Church at 1130 Falmouth Rd in Centerville, MA . Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 am prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Chandler Gray Cemetery , West Yarmouth, MA .
