Robert Wallace McClenahan Jr. (March 6, 1935 - March 22, 2025) - Barnstable, MA.

Maybe you met a guy in Barnstable Village, who was whistling. That was Bob. Robert Wallace McClenahan Jr. was born in Chestnut Hill, PA on March 6, 1935. His parents were Sallie Phillips McClenahan and Robert Wallace McClenahan. His wife, Becky, Ann Rebecca Freeman was born in South Carolina. Bob and Becky met at UNC, Chapel Hill, NC in the German department where he got a Masters.

Early in his life he was a student at St. Albans in Washington DC and he also went to school in Rochester NY. His best student days were spent at South Kent School for Boys in CT where he played the organ and was head dishwasher. There he met many life-long friends. He went to Trinity College in CT (graduating in 1959) and spent a year in England at Exeter University.

He spent 2 years in the navy and 3 years in banking at Morgan Guaranty, NY. Then he began his life’s passion as a teacher. He taught at St. George’s (Newport, RI) and Hamden Hall (Hamden, CT). He was Head of the Middle/Lower Schools at St. Margaret-McTernan (Waterbury, CT). He was chairman of the Board at Washington Montessori in CT -helping the school become independent from the town. And he was Headmaster of the Madison Country Day School (Madison, CT).

In 1980, after teaching, Bob worked at AG Edwards (Hamden, CT) as a financial consultant. He also ran for Alderman in New Haven, CT and served on the New Haven Board of Education. In 1999, Bob and Becky moved to the Cape and Bob worked for A G Edwards (Hyannis, MA) and then at Paine Weber/UBS (Hyannis, MA).

Bob and his wife had 55 years together until March 22, 2025 when he died peacefully after 90 years. Bob and Becky had two children (Amanda Waring McClenahan and Edward Phillips McClenahan). Bob is also survived by his sister, Bunny, Sallie McClenahan Thompson, and many beloved family members.

Bob’s family are parishioners of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church (Barnstable, MA) and St. Andrews Episcopal Church (Hyannis Port, MA).

His mother’s father was priest-in-charge at St. Andrews in the summers. Bob also followed his leadership by becoming a Senior Warden. Bob always said about St. Andrews - “God lives here.”

A service will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church at 11:00am on Saturday April 26, 2025. The family is grateful to Broad Reach Hospice for their faithful care. Gifts to celebrate his life may be made to St. Mary’s Church or NAMI Cape Cod & Islands (Hyannis, MA).
