Sylvia Louise Walker

Sylvia was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts to Althea and Lt. Commander Grafton B. Fish in 1939. She moved to Cape Cod in 1959 to attend Nurse’s Training at Cape Cod Hospital. During her time there, she met James A. Walker of Hyannis, a member of the U.S. Coast Guard. They married in 1961 and together raised four children in Hyannis.

Her passions and hobbies include taking her kids to the beaches every summer; volunteering at Hospice with Mary McCarthy; volunteering at Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod assisting with building the Danvers Way project in Hyannis. Jim and Sylvia loved classic and antique cars. They were members of the Cape Cod Car Club and participated in many local parades and car shows, he with his Model A Roadster and she with her canary yellow 1955 Ford Thunderbird (later changed to peacock blue). The couple were best friends with Bill & Mary Fiske of West Barnstable, whom they met through the antique car clubs.

Jim was known for his leading role to restore Race Point Lighthouse and Sandy Neck Lighthouse, and Sylvia was his biggest supporter and volunteer. She had numerous pets over the years, including Rusty, the golden retriever who loved to ride in the T-bird with her! Jim and Sylvia were lifelong active members of The Federated Church of Hyannis.

Sylvia is survived by two children, James Walker, Jr. and Lynnette Walker (Mark Williams), all of Hyannis; her best friend Peggy Hallet; and a very dear niece Susan Stankiewicz of Rhode Island; neighbor Gloria Alexander, as well as many friends and relatives. Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband Jim, daughter Cheryl, son Richard, and all of her siblings: David, Win & Eleanor.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod, or Cape Cod Healthcare Dementia & Alzheimer’s Support Group.
