
Commissioner Victor Skende, of Hyannis, MA passed away on March 3rd at Cape Cod Hospital, surrounded by his beloved Hyannis Fire Department family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Kaliroi and Theofan Skende, his dog Pumpkin, and his sister, Beverly Skende, all of Hyannis. Victor is survived by his cousin, Christine Dhimos, of New York, his many friends, the Hyannis Fire District, and the Hyannis community.
Victor was born in 1936 at Cape Cod Hospital and grew up in Hyannis. He was a proud graduate of Barnstable High School, Class of 1954, and Harvard University, Class of 1958. He served his country as a member of the United States Army, stationed in Germany.
One of Victor’s most significant contributions was his work as a social worker in Manchester, NH, where he dedicated his efforts to supporting low-income and at-risk youth, profoundly impacting many lives.
In his later years, Victor served as a Hyannis Fire Commissioner from 2015 until his passing. His leadership was instrumental during a critical time for the Hyannis Fire District, where he played a key role in securing approval for a new fire station, increasing firefighter staffing, enhancing transparency and accountability, and advocating for firefighter health and wellness.
Victor's commitment to his family, friends, and community was unwavering. Even in his final days, he continued to work toward making his community safer and stronger.
A memorial service in his honor will be held at the Hyannis Fire Department on March 12th, 2025, at 10 a.m. Following the service, guests are invited to a brief burial ceremony at Beechwood Cemetery in Centerville, MA.
