Cathie Maureen Nagel, 72, of Independence, Missouri, passed away on February 21, 2026.
Cathie was born in 1953 to Betty and Dick Layden in Independence, where she also grew up and later graduated from Truman High School. She had deep roots in Independence, the community she would always call home.
Cathie shared 51 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Kim. Together they built a life centered on family, loyalty, and unwavering support for their children and grandchildren.
Cathie will be remembered most for her deep love of family. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was a devoted PTA mom, dance mom, and sports mom who never missed a game, recital, or performance. She paid attention to every detail — from thoughtful meal planning to carefully chosen gifts — and was always ready with wisdom, encouragement, and practical advice.
Her home was a gathering place. Cathie loved having a full house and truly lived with an open-door policy — everyone was welcome. She cherished lively conversations, friendly debates, and playful teasing. She took great pride in being an excellent cook, always making sure there was plenty of food, snacks, and comfort for whoever walked through her door.
Cathie lovingly cared for her five grandchildren daily until they reached school age. Even after they started school, she faithfully picked them up, helped with homework, and welcomed them each afternoon. Her grandchildren visited her daily — she was their confidant, their safe place, and their biggest supporter.
She valued family traditions and faithfully hosted Sunday dinner. She was always just a phone call away, day or night, and her family knew without question that she would be there.
Cathie was a lifelong fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. She grew up going to games with her parents and continued that tradition with her own family. Her family had season tickets for decades, and Sundays in the fall were reserved for Chiefs football.
Cathie was preceded in death by her parents, Betty and Dick Layden. She is survived by her devoted husband, Kim Nagel; her children, Casey Nagel (Mark Paxton), Chrissy Durham, and Korey Nagel; her beloved grandchildren, Kyle Durham, Kenzie Durham, Gracie Durham, Kynlee Nagel, and Karter Nagel; her brother, Tim Layden (Beth); and her nieces and nephews, Jason Layden (Jonathan Ji), Patrick Layden, Jeremy Layden (Pam), Jessica Shubert (Michael), and David Layden.
A visitation will be held on Friday, February 27th from 10 AM to Noon followed by a Celebration of Life service from Noon to 1 PM. The visitation and service will be held at the Newcomer’s Noland Road Chapel, 509 S. Noland Rd., Independence, MO 64050.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Independence Academy’s therapy dog program, honoring Cathie’s love and care for children and her community.
