
Donald “Don” Arthur Kuske, 81, of Independence, MO passed away on August 7, 2016, peacefully, at his home after bravely battling cancer. Don was born on October 5,1934 in Jamestown, North Dakota, the first son of Milton and Leona Kuske. He grew up in Fargo, North Dakota where he graduated from Central High School in 1952. He attended North Dakota State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry in 1956, He enlisted in the Navy and attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He served as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in San Diego from 1958 to 1962. Following his service he moved to Kansas City, Missouri and worked as a chemist for Seidlitz Paint Company (Valspar). He helped develop a coating that was used on skating rinks. While working at Seidlitz, Don met his future wife, Genie. They were married in 1965 and settled in Independence, Missouri. Don started collecting stamps around age ten and, as he grew, so did his interest and collection. After taking early retirement in 1980, Don turned his hobby into a business. He started B&D Stamps, with fellow philatelist, Bob Norman. After Bob passed away, Don worked for Americana Collectors in Independence until 1991. He started E&D Stamp Auctions, with fellow collector Ed Myers. They sold the business in 2011, but Don continued to work with stamps until recently. After seven decades of collecting, he still found time for his hobby almost every day. Don also enjoyed watching the Royals win, corny commercial jingles, challenging game shows or puzzles and mystery shows. He was happiest at home, in his favorite chair, surrounded by his family and his stamps. Don is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Genie Kuske; five children, Steve Kuske (Carla), Lee’s Summit, MO Rick Kuske (Mel), Fargo, ND, Kim Kuske, Fargo, ND, Jeff Kuske, Independence and Leslie Slaughter (Brad), Leawood, KS; three grandchildren, Nicky Kuske, Jack and Maddy Slaughter, four great-grandsons, a brother, Duane Kuske (Connie), Bella Vista, AR, brother-in-law, Joe Curtan (JoAnne) Bradenton, FL, sister-in-law Pam Green (Stan) Fairview, TX; along with many nieces and nephews. The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude for all of the love, prayers and support during Don’s illness. They are at peace knowing that he is no longer suffering, but is rejoicing in God’s presence. A memorial service will be held at 2:00, on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at St. Michaels Episcopal Church, 4000 S. Lee's Summit Rd, Independence, MO 64055. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to St. Michaels or Kansas City Hospice.
