Donald Lee Underwood passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on July 26, 2025, surrounded by his five loving daughters and granddaughter, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was 92 years old.
Born on October 19, 1932, to Raymond and Cynthia Underwood, Don grew up in Independence, Missouri, and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1950. That same year, on October 14th, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty, beginning a lifelong partnership built on devotion, hard work, and love.
Don proudly served in the United States Army as a Sergeant First Class in the 440th Armored Field Artillery Battalion from 1953 to 1961, including four years of active duty and the remainder in reserves. After his military service, he pursued a career as a pharmacist, graduating in 1959—a milestone he often credited to Betty's unwavering support, as she worked tirelessly to help put him through school.
In 1960, Don purchased his first business, Midway Pharmacy, which he owned and operated with integrity and dedication until 1994. After selling Midway, he continued to work as a pharmacist for several local pharmacies, including Watt Drug Company, 50 Plus Pharmacy, and BB Drugs. In total, Don devoted more than 57 years to his profession, serving customers with care, knowledge, and a genuine love for his work.
Over the course of his career, he not only served countless customers but also contributed to the community as a member of the board for Park Lane Medical Center and as the owner of a second pharmacy, Park Ridge. Don was a natural mentor; he guided many future pharmacists with wisdom and care.
Don was a man who led by example. He believed in action over promises, often reminding his family, “Don’t tell me what you’re going to do, show me what you have done.” His relentless work ethic and values were passed down to his daughters and grandchildren, who carry his lessons with them every day.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Don’s greatest pride was his family. He and Betty created a home filled with love and adventure, taking their daughters and grandchildren on unforgettable vacations—from Christmas in Cancún to spring breaks in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica—making memories that will be cherished for generations.
In his later years, Don remained steadfast in his love and care for Betty, devoting himself fully to her until her passing. His loyalty, generosity, and quiet strength were ever-present in his actions.
Don is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Underwood; his brother, Raymond Underwood Jr.; and his parents, Raymond Sr. and Cynthia Underwood.
He is survived by his brother, George Underwood; his daughters, Gail Porter (David), Barb Simon (Joe), Linda Chapman (Dale), Patricia Underwood-Baker, and Denise Duncan (Brett); his grandchildren, Corey Chapman, Spenser Simon, Seth Duncan, Chelsea Wilkins (Ryan), Colton Chapman, Samuel Baker (Cheyenne Golden), and Jameson Baker; and his great-grandchildren, Haven Blankenship-Duncan, Willow Chapman, Liam, Layton, Levy, and Luca Wilkins, and Maverick and Ashton Baker. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Don loved fiercely and gave generously. He worked hard to provide a beautiful life for his family, and in doing so, he built a legacy of love, strength, and integrity that will live on in all who knew him.
A memorial gathering for Donald will be held Thursday, August 7, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Newcomer's Noland Road Chapel, 509 S Noland Rd, Independence, Missouri 64050. A Mass of Christian burial will occur Friday, August 8, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Parish, 600 N Liberty St, Independence, Missouri 64050. Inurnment service will follow at Mt Olivet Catholic Cemetery, 7601 Blue Ridge Blvd, Raytown, Missouri 64138.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Don’s memory by extending a generous act of kindness or mentorship to someone in need—just as he did throughout his life. Donations may also be made in his honor to the Sarah Cannon Cancer Network.
