

James was born August 24, 1940 in Pittsburg, Kansas to the late Lonnie W. and Bertha (Carlyon) Rockwood. He graduated from William Chrisman High School; where he was recognized for his outstanding achievements in ROTC and proudly served his country in the United States Navy after graduation. In later years, James was very active in the Boy Scouts of America. He was past treasurer and Unit Commissioner of the Heart of America Chapter and an assistant leader of Troop 803. He took his family and numerous Scouts on many excursions to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
James worked for over 30 years at Armco/GST Steel before retiring to enjoy his two favorite things…his family and traveling. He was also an avid train lover and stopped to watch them anytime he could.
James is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy “Dottie” Kay Rockwood; sister Linda Lage (Bruce); daughter Jennifer Ellis (Gary); grandchildren Ashlee Ellis, Nicholas Ellis and Tyler Hankins; as well as several great-grandchildren and nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son James ‘Jamie” Donald Rockwood.
Services for James will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2024 at the Newcomer’s Noland Road Chapel, 509 S. Noland Rd., Independence, Missouri 64050. Visitation at 1:00 pm with funeral service to follow at 2:00pm. Graveside service with full military honors will be immediately following at New Salem Cemetery, 1823 N. Blue Mills Rd., Independence, Missouri 64058.
