William (Bill) Gerold Donaldson, 103, passed away May 30, 2025, at his home in Leawood, KS.
Bill was born and raised in Independence, MO and married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Ann Cook, on Christmas Day, 1941. They resided in Independence throughout their lives together and were active members of the First Baptist Church and graduates of William Chrisman High School. Bill proudly served in the Army 7th Infantry Division as Sgt and Intel and Recon platoon leader from 1942 until December 1945, including the amphibious invasions of Attu, Kiska, Kwajalein, Leyte, and Okinawa. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Combat Infantryman Badge for his service.
Upon his return from service, Bill attended Finley Engineering College and was employed by Standard Oil Company of Indiana (AMOCO) first as a machinist and soon as manager in the mechanical systems division at the Sugar Creek refinery, retiring in 1981 after 42 years.
During Bill’s unexpectedly long retirement, he enjoyed grandkids, great-grandkids, travel, fishing, and the company of many good friends and neighbors. Known as always polite, gentlemanly, and prepared for anything, he was loved, admired, and respected throughout his life. He leaves behind many joyful memories and a family legacy of traditional Christian values, quiet strength, frugality and disciplined lifestyle.
Bill was predeceased by Dorothy, his wife of 64 years, in 2005. He is survived by sons, William Donaldson (Theresa) of Leawood, KS; Robert Donaldson (Trisha) of Shawnee, KS; three grandchildren: Colleen (Chris) Morrisey, Olathe, KS; Kyle (Erin) Donaldson, Lenexa, KS; Drew Donaldson, Berkeley, CA., and great-grandchildren Reghan and Avery Morrisey and MacKenzie and Charlie Donaldson.
Private family services were provided by Newcomers Noland Road Chapel with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.
