William A. Marks (Bill) was born July 6, 1930, in Columbus, Ohio, to William H. Marks and Ruth (Ecklund) Marks. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Avalon Bryant Marks, and his sister, Patti (Marks) Baldridge. Bill is survived by his son, William R. Marks, his niece, Linda Howell (Rick), his grandnephew Alexander Howell (Nikki), great-grandnephews Connor and Archer, grandnephew Danny Howell (Tammy), great-grandnephew Mason, great-grandnieces Tennisen and Ireland, and his friend and caregiver Anne Bartholome.
Bill’s childhood was spent with his sister and parents in Columbus, Ohio. He moved to Kansas City with his family when he was in high school. Bill served in the Navy from 1950-1954 during the Korean War as a Radio Operator aboard the U.S.S. Toledo. He married Avalon Bryant in 1951 and they were married 45 years before she passed away in 1996. Shortly after graduating from the Kansas City Central Technical Institute in 1956, he went to work for Bendix Aviation Corporation where he was a Technical Writer until his retirement in 1992.
Bill was a master at ‘fixing’ about anything, TVs, radios, appliances, cars, etc. He was a hardworking member of the Greatest Generation, and would try to fix anything before throwing it away. Despite the physical challenges he faced from psoriatic arthritis later in life, he lived in his own home in Hyde Park until this summer, with the help of his friend Anne, his son Bill, and the caring staff at St. Croix Hospice. He died peacefully on September 25, 2023. He was 93 years old.
His family is planning a private celebration of Bill’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers friends donate to the charity of their choice.
