It is with broken hearts that we share our husband, dad and papa suffered a massive stroke on Friday October 3, 2025 and passed away on Monday October 6, 2025 at the age of 76 years.
In true Tom fashion, his last 48 hours included being surrounded by family, 2 road trips, a helicopter ride & so many tales to tell.
We are grateful for IH ambulance, Regina General Hospital Emergency, STARS Air ambulance, Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon & Regina General Hospital 5A.
Harvey Thomas (Tom) Redding was born to Richard and Electa Redding (nee Bartlett) on September 20, 1949 in Mayerthorpe, Alberta. The “middle” child… a younger sibling to Rick, Neva & Molly Ann & big brother to Ralph, Francy, Eileen and Allan. His childhood was full of adventures, shenanigans & and life experiences that laid the groundwork for a work ethic that was marveled by most & even feared by some!
He often spoke of his time working in the North in the late 60’s for the Hudson Bay Company. The experiences & friendships forged a love of the land & people.
“I’ve been everywhere Man. I’ve been everywhere”. Sums up his working experiences beautifully!
In 1970, Tom married his one true love Darlene Steinhubl. They were married in a blizzard on December 31st (he’d often joke that it was a clever move for taxes to marry that day & anything to outsmart the “higher ups” always made him smile!). Tom & Darlene had many adventures and travels! His love of a road trip, even in less than ideal road conditions over the mountains, allowed them to spend their early married life from the mines of northern Manitoba to BC working & enjoying each other, friends and family along the way.
In 1972 they settled down in North Battleford for work but also to be closer to family. They welcomed their first daughter Amy in 1973. Their time was short in Battleford as another job opportunity would take them to Yorkton in 1975 where their second daughter Charity was born. By 1977 they were on the move again for work. Back to Regina and closer to family.
In 1980 on a Sunday drive, “no better family time than in a vehicle travelling anywhere you don’t see anything by staying home” he would say! On that drive they fell in love with a home in Sintaluta. Raising kids in a small town motivated Dad & Mom to make the move to small town life. In 1985, they welcomed a son Curtis.
Dad spent most of the 80’s-2000’s working away from home. He built power lines & put in underground power all over Canada. He wore the “white hat“ with pride and was known as a tough boss but fair to a fault.
After decades in the power industry, he returned to his love of trucking & hauling hogs and later oil in the patch.
It was always his love of the land and people that made work never seem like work for dad. His work ethic was truly one of his legacies to his family and everyone he crossed paths with.
When he wasn’t working, time off from work always meant time with family. The closeness to the Qu’Appelle Valley allowed him to enjoy his passions of trapping, hunting, bird watching and back road cruising.
Tom was an avid reader of westerns, a master at completing jigsaw puzzles, a master thrifter, antique treasure hunter and recycler & he always enjoyed his Caesars!
In 1995 Tom was given his most important “white hat“ title. He became a Papa! Over these last 30 years, the job of Papa has brought him endless joys and a sense of pride taller than even the tallest power line he built or the largest set of antlers he had ever encountered!
In 2014 Indian Head became home. This time the move was not for work but with retirement on the horizon. He could be found during his retirement years cruising the ditches on his quad looking for recyclables. Always keeping track of how many he took in!
Dad enjoyed his years in Indian Head. His routine of family time, friends, the post office, 2S Auctions, country & town cruises, feeding the birds, cutting grass & his Sarcan drop offs filled his days.
His gifts of time, treasures & tall tales will be missed by everyone.
“Roll on highway, roll on along
Roll on, Daddy, til you get back home
Roll on family, roll on crew
Roll on, Mama, like I asked you to do
And roll on, eighteen-wheeler, roll on.”
Tom is predeceased by his parents Richard and Electa Redding; parents-in-law Paul and Amelia Steinhubl; siblings: Neva, Allan, Ralph and Rick.
Left to “Roll on” are his loving wife Darlene; daughter Amy (Darcy Gares) and grandchildren Seth (Kayla) & Zane; daughter Charity and grandchildren Grace & Lily Taylor; Son Curtis (Stacey) and grandchildren: Kohen, Axxel, Zoie, Ottoh, Oliver & Finley.
Tom (Big Tom, Uncle Tom, Tom Bomb) is also survived by many close family members & friends.
As per Tom’s wishes there will be No Service (& we know better than to not listen to him!). Take the time to read a book, go for a drive, find a treasure & be kind to one another.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom’s memory may be made to the Indian Head Hospital Foundation, Box 1547,Indian Head, SK, S0G 2K0 or by etransfer: [email protected] or to the Kinsmen Foundation/TeleMiracle, 2217C Hanselman Court, Saskatoon, SK, S7L 6A8.
