In memory of Adepeju Fatimat Oshodi. 
A year ago today, our sister, Adepeju, died at Cornell University.  
The reality still shocks, raising confusion and deep sorrow. She was only 32.
A champion for others, Adepeju is remembered today with nostalgia and the usual questions: “Why did she have to die?” What, How, Maybe...
But in the questions,  we find a flicker of strength to remain sane and sturdy in what we must do.
We keep breathing, not for the vanity of life but for those of us that she left behind;  for comfort from sorrow; for reason and for understanding of the meaning of her life and the inevitability of death.
In that sorrow, we see the light of God shining through, reminding us that “Even then”, “Even there”, “Even when”, “Even after”,  ... his hands will guide us, his right hand will hold us fast, Psalm 139: 10.
Although the darkness comes, sorrow grips our heart and we wonder, but the love of God shines through even into the darkest places. 
We miss you dearly, Adepeju, but no matter how dark everything looks, we know with certainty that we can count on God's promise.

I only learned of Peju's passing last week. We worked at the VA together and became friends.
Peju kept me laughing, she was so funny. Even though we both departed from the VA we never lost touch. Peju called me the last time she was in Indy. We had our usual bouts of laughter. Nothing could have prepared to know that would be our last conversation. My condolences to her family and friends.

Peju will always be the gregarious, passionate, and most creative person I have ever met. I am so thankful for the time she shared with me and I will never forget the impact she has made in my life. Who can I ever enjoy Chick-fil-A on the Indy campus with again? There is absolutely no substitute to her infectious energy and kindness. From movie nights to demanding we celebrate the small wins of graduate school, knowing Peju was loving Peju. 

I am so sad the world has lost a beacon of joy and justice, but I am thankful for her to find eternal peace.

I met Peju through Black In Immuno during a particularly difficult time in my life. Her infectious energy and easygoing personality brought us close almost instantly. I’ll never forget when she drove all the way from Indy to Chicago to spend the day with me after I lost my mom. That gesture meant the world to me.

We grew even closer when she lost her mom the following year, leaning on each other in ways only we could understand. The last time we talked, on December 13th, she was toying with the idea of joining me in San Francisco, and we planned to revisit the conversation after the holidays. It breaks my heart that I’ll never get the chance to talk to her again.

I’m so sad I never got a picture with you, Peju. I miss you deeply, my fellow Taurus. Rest well, my dear friend.

We often take for granted that the special bonds and friends we have made at each stage will be eternal until some serendipitous moment that we will meet again. I never would have considered the possibility that I would lose a friend with whom I was so close, so quickly. Peju was a brilliant soul; highly intelligent, driven, principled, and one of the most dedicated people I have known. I was blessed to have spent my formative years in high school alongside her, and to have known her in the years after.  We may not have had a time to reconnect in this plane, but hopefully that time will come in the next.

My heart goes out to Peju's family. I cannot even begin to imagine the heartache they are feeling, and I offer my sincerest condolences as well as healing prayers and comfort to them in this trying time.

I got to know Peju through my sister Michelle during their undergrad days at IU Bloomington. Once she found that I braided hair, she would make the hours-long trip from Indy to South Bend for me to braid her hair. I got to know her even better during those intimate conversations in the many hours she spent in my braiding chair. She was an amazing person and a source of positivity. She was very caring, supportive, hard-working, empathetic, and driven. I was so shocked when I heard she passed. To know her is to like her. I don’t know why she was called home so soon, but I hope to see her on Resurrection day.. My deepest condolences to the family, especially to her brother, on another  loss. May we all be better people because we knew her. Rest in Peace Sweet Peju ❤️

Thank you Peju for the fun memories.  World is never going to be the same without you.

Peju, I miss you so much. Peju was an incredible member of her community. We both joined Black in Immuno around the same time and I was always impressed by her great suggestions for the group and her friendly, joyous nature. I was so lucky I got to meet her in Boston one time when she was visiting and we got to walk around the Muji store together, finally spending way too much money on small things. I was really looking forward to seeing her again on her next visit and laughing during our regular meetings. She is truly an irreplaceable person and I feel incredibly lucky to have known her, even if for such a short time. Rest in peace my friend, your spirit lives on in all the lives you have touched.

I first met Peju during my last year in Ithaca and she instantly left an impression on me. We  bonded over trivia night, love for life and a good laugh. So I asked her directly “Where have you been this whole time?” and she burst out laughing. Peju was an amazing friend; I’ve seen her show up and support  fellow Cornell students in ways that echos a lifetime of friendship. Her generosity and optimism is very inspiring. I’ll miss our calls, our jokes and IG banter. I offer my deepest condolences to Peju’s family.

It’s still a profound shock to accept that Peju is no longer with us. You were one of the happiest, kindest, and smartest people I’ve had the privilege to know. Thank you for the love, warmth, and generosity you shared during your time here. I’m certain you’re in a better place now. Rest peacefully, Peju.

Eclectic in nature, she was such a strong light. When I met her in college, I kept to myself and rarely tried to make new friend but, even now I can close my eyes and see her huge smile. Her bubbly personality that simply lit up any room. I can see her braces as she would sometimes let out this ridiculously silly laugh, simply enjoying the presence of other humans in the same space. She was a bright one. Even when I close my eyes, I remember the way she walked, the clothes she loved to wear. A sundress, perfect for someone with the mind and personality as radiant as the sun. I can see the little pout and scowl she would jokingly wear on her face to make us laugh. It’s been a decade since I’ve been in her presence but her soul has carried on so strong even as I reflect on her life today. We’ve lost a powerful one. We’ve lost a brilliant life. This one hurts. This one hurts.

RIP Peju until we meet again at the Resurrection Day with our Lord Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Redeemer. . . and all tears shall be wiped away!!!

I am very grateful to have met Peju and experience her driven and joyous spirit. It was always refreshing to see her either off campus or in the mouse facility at Cornell :)!

All memories that I have of Peju, are happy ones. She had an energy that would make the worst situations seem manageable. I am so grateful to have been able to experience her friendship. I miss her so much and wish we could share more memories together.  One of my favorite memories is sitting with her in Applebee's or Chili's after a long week.  We would joke and laugh until the restaurant closed. She was so encouraging and optimistic for both of our futures. Rest peacefully, Peju!

Such sad news, thinking of Peju's family at this time. 
Two thoughts come to mind when I think of Peju: 
She was always optimistic (in the lab, in life) even when experiments did not go as planned or results weren't what she expected. 
Peju knew EVERYONE.  She was the hub that brought so many people together. Once you met her, you remembered her and you became friends with her friends. 
I will always remember Peju fondly.

Peju was the type of friend that everyone needs, but rarely can find. The type of friend you could always lean on for anything. As I reminisce on our memories together, my heart aches that she is no longer with us. She would always encourage me and give me good big cousin advice. Even when I was at my lowest she was there with a smile on her face, and we'd hang out and I'd forget for a second the things that I had been worrying about. I remember our times at the VA where we were super confused by how everything was been run lol, we'd go get bubba and spend much time catching up on REDcap ( Oh, how we hated REDcap)! So many great memories.

Her love and care for her family and friends was evident in the way she would talk so much about them. We would bond on hope and dreams for our futures and managed to guide each other to not give up! Even when she was going through so much summer of 2022, she still managed to help me move out of my apartment. We'd have long talks in the car as we go for coffee runs, hoping and praying for God's will . Our last memory was when you came to visit me in Indy to see Naomi about a year ago.  

Peju, I wish we could have had more amazing memories or that I could have done more for you. You were a gem - truly one of the most funniest and smartest friends that I had. I miss you dearly and pray that you rest peaceful in the bosom of our Heavenly Father.  Love you

Peju burst with the most contagious laugh and the most infectious smile.  It felt warm being around her and we are grateful to have known her. She was a great fiend and wonderful person. We'll miss her so much.

Ibennah- Adeniyi Wedding April 2023

I met Peju at my cousin’s wedding in April 2023 where we were both seated at the same table. In the first few minutes of knowing her, I already knew that she was funny, vivacious, caring, and willing to be vulnerable. Looking at the photo that we took, you would think that we all had been friends for a long time. Although we didn’t talk after the wedding was over, I never forgot her. Her bold personality and kind spirit stayed with me long after we were apart. I was hoping to meet up with her again, but we’ll have to do that in another place, at another time. May she rest in peace.

Peju was one of my best friends in college and we worked in the same lab. She was hilarious, kind, and witty. We’d eat fried rice from this Chinese food stand on kirkwood together after class, or work in the cafeteria in the union - sometimes treating ourselves to frozen yogurt or Burger King. She saved me from a bad date once by saying her “dorm room flooded” 😂 and then we got McDonald’s in her car. We went to look at the turtles in petsmart for fun one summer and died laughing watching one try to eat a large tomato. She made everything more fun - even if it was a long drive home to Indianapolis for a school break stuck in traffic or discussing homework. These and many more and memories I would think of very fondly in passing over the years. Rest in peace, Peju 💜 ill think of you every time I think of college or fried rice or I-65 since I always took the wrong exit without fail dropping you off at home

I'm so sad to hear this news. Peju was a joy to have as a GEM intern here at the Hill's Pet Nutrition Center during the summer of 2023. She displayed so much talent and drive, and the world is missing this now as a result of her leaving us too soon. My sincerest condolences to her family and friends.

Peju was a dear colleague of mine in graduate school. She had the brightness smile, was really compassionate, intelligent, and overall a joy to be around. I am saddened to know she is not with us physically, but she will always be in my heart and mind.
