Bruce passed away after an acute battle of pneumonia. He was surrounded by his family. His last words were "grieve quietly".
Bruce was the eldest boy in a family of six. He was born in the middle of WW2 on June 18th, 1943. He had two brothers, John and Norm, along with three younger sisters Linda, Marcia and Carol.
He grew up in the east side neighborhood of Brightwood. Having been the oldest, he embraced the role of being a father figure at a pivotal point in his young life. Whether it was leading his brothers in odd jobs to help support their family or keeping them in check from whatever trouble they would get into. Suffice to say, Bruce would go on to impact many people throughout his life as a father, a brother, a son and officer on the fire department.
He was loyal, dependable, trustworthy, motivated, hardworking and compassionate. Being a steadfast father, caring brother and son, he was also a devoted servant to his career and an honest businessman.
He was fortunate to join the Indianapolis Fire Department in July of 1969. He gave the following 30 years of service unblemished. He was well respected while on the job. He followed his father on IFD, as did all four sons, Mark, Eric, Kevin and finally Ben.
Coinciding that time, he held a second job on his off shift days. He started a successful flooring business in his small, home garage. Decorator Services and later Floors2You, would grow to include his sons and support roughly 10 salaried employees as well as over 10 two man crews as subcontractors.
Bruce lived a prosperous life in his 82 years. While it may have had a modest start, he would go on to raise and support a family with love and earnestness. Having a long career, raising four sons to adulthood, and building hot rods with his brothers were his successes. He always tried to leave something better than he found it.
He never forgot where he came from, helping form the Brightwood Boys club, consisting of friends and family he grew up with in Brightwood. They gathered frequently to enjoy fellowship and common threads of hot rodding.
He spent 30 years on the job, but the secret success was being on the pension for almost 27 years. Firefighters would all know the significance of this fact.
Bruce was blessed with marriage to his wife Barb for 2,730 days, an update he gave almost daily since they were wed. He was a member of the Noblesville Pilgrim Holiness Church where he yielded to Christ, was blessed with salvation, and discovered a loving church family.
