Born in Indianapolis on September 12, 1941, to Harold and Eula Lewis, Courtland embraced faith and accepted Christ early in life, finding his spiritual home at the First Baptist Church of North Indianapolis. He grew up attending the Indianapolis Public Schools, shining as a multi-sport athlete at Crispus Attucks High School, where he graduated in 1960. Courtland was not only a star on the varsity track, football, basketball, and baseball teams, but also a proud member of the Lettermen Club and the Chess Club, showcasing his competitive spirit and intellect.
In 1961, Courtland began his career at the Ford Motor Company Indianapolis Auto Assembly Plant, dedicating 41 years of hard work and commitment before retiring. His service to his country began shortly after high school when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1962. Courtland served honorably for four years, earning accolades such as the Vietnamese Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal, and finishing his service with the rank of Lance Corporal.
On July 28, 1973, Courtland married the love of his life, Rosa Lee Smith. Together, they welcomed three wonderful children into the world: Andwele in 1973, Chinara in 1981, and Jabari in 1983. Family was always a priority for Courtland; he cherished the time spent with his children and took immense pride in their lives.
Passionate about civic engagement, Courtland actively advocated for veterans and military families alongside Rosa, writing heartfelt letters to state and federal officials, including several U.S. presidents. His dedication to civil rights led him to contribute articles honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. to the Indianapolis Star throughout the 1970s.
A generous man with a heart for service, Courtland sponsored a child in South Africa for many years and lent his support to numerous charitable organizations, including The Wounded Warriors Project, St. Jude Children's Hospital, and Susan G. Komen. These contributions brought him immense joy and fulfillment.
In his leisure time, Courtland relished activities that allowed him to unwind and enjoy life. From hunting and fishing to bowling and card games, he embraced every moment. He had a passion for riding motorcycles and loved to dance, making memories with his family. His true culinary talent shone through on the grill, where he would prepare mouthwatering venison burgers, much to Rosa's delight. He even passed down his signature macaroni and cheese recipe to his daughter, ensuring that his legacy would live on through family gatherings.
Courtland is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved grandparents, Sampson and Rowena King, as well as his brothers: Michael, Roy, and Rodney, and his sister, Vivian. He leaves behind a family who will carry on his memory: former wife, Rosa Lewis; sons, Andwele (Natalie) and Jabari; daughter, Chinara; sister, Stephanie; grandchildren: Dylan, Leon, Zavion, Keegan, and Kennedi; niece, Monnica; and a host of other family members and friends.
