Damon was born November 17, 1971, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He graduated Warren Central High School and enlisted in the Army. Damon was baptized into Christ in 2008 at the Harding Street Church of Christ. He later moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he lived for 10 years. Damon moved back to Indianapolis in July 2020.
Damon loved his family and extended families. Damon highly cherished his relationships with his mother, whom he called Ma’D or D’Moms, his sister Danielle (Den) and his niece Dasia. He was the youngest of the “Core 4” group, which included his sister Danielle and his cousins Stacey and Shonda.
Damon married Penny Johnson in 1995 and acquired two bonus sons, Dane and Demarcus. Although the marriage ended, the union between the Johnson/McClain families remains strong and intact.
Damon’s early career choices were as varied as his personality. Whether it was making screens for shirts at Logo 7, construction jobs or working in a group home with the disabled, he took pride in his labor. Damon had a huge heart of gold and was very giving. He frequently volunteered his time and skills to help others, from cutting hair to repairing and building things.
Damon was a visionary and loved creating. While in Georgia, he continued to hone his skills as an independent contractor and as a project manager remodeling hotels and high-rise luxury apartments for United Corp International. He had a leadership style that made others want to follow him. He was always excited to show off his work and share his accomplishments with his family and friends.
Those who “knew” Damon “knows” Damon. He ALWAYS had a story to tell, a prank to play or a challenge to execute. Damon was extremely intelligent and had of way of connecting with others. He had the “gift of gab” and could hold a conversation with anyone about anything, whether it was a top dignitary official or someone down on their luck. Damon was engaging and had a commonsense way of making you look at things. He was an entertainer by nature. His laugh was infectious, and his goal was to meet at least one new friend a day.
Phrases often associated with Damon: “What it do Foo Foo?” (common greeting); “This is going to be bananas” (he was about to put his personal touch on something); “It’s cool… it’s cool” (means it was not cool, something was wrong); “Look sweetheart” (being condescending); “Who-dee-who” (attention getter); “One Love, Baby” (we are all connected); “You know what I mean?” (do you comprehend); “Yo, I’m in the wind” (good-bye); “No doubt” (I agree).
