David was born the oldest of five children to Patricia (Downard) and Kenneth Bendler, who preceded him in death, on September 25, 1951. He attended John Marshall High School before enlisting in the United States Army.
David proudly served our country and was stationed in Germany. During his time of service, he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Marksman M-14 Badge. He was a proud veteran and was a member of the Mooresville American Legion.
David loved and lived his life to the fullest. He loved spending time outdoors camping, boating, and fishing. When not outdoors, he loved spending time with family and friends. He was always up to throw darts and play cards, especially euchre. Anytime David was playing euchre, there were two things you were guaranteed to hear. When discussing partners, he would always say “Sit across from me and I’ll make you a winner” and when selecting markers, it was always clubs, “The thing you beat people with”.
David was also an avid Colts fan. He never missed a game and was always wearing one of his Colts hats.
David is preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth “Chip” Bendler Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 33 years, Susan Bendler as well as his children David Bendler Jr (Jackie), Karla Taylor, Mary “Francie” Mitchaner (Tony), and Amy Pittman. He also leaves behind brothers Carl (Nini) Bendler and Dale Bendler, sister Vicki Bendler, grandchildren Michael Roe, Teagan Bendler, Holly Pittman, Jillian Pittman, and Luke Pittman as well as great-grandchildren Kendall Pittman, Jackson Berold, and Liam Berold, and many cousins who were more like siblings.
A memorial visitation for David will be held Sunday, August 11, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Crown Hill Gothic Chapel, 700 W 38th St, Indianapolis, IN.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the St. Croix Hospice team for their kindness and care in the short time David was home before passing.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in David’s memory to Helping Veterans & Families of Indiana Inc (HVAF), or the American Diabetes Foundation.
