

He attended North Central High School and was a graduate of Broad Ripple High School. On May 13, 1966, Don entered into the United States Marine Corps. He was soon off to Vietnam where he proudly served his country. He was discharged March 3, 1969 coming home with a Purple Heart, and several other Vietnam Service Medals and citations.
Don was a kind and gentle soul who was a true craftsman at heart. He was an accomplished welder, blacksmith and leatherworker. He made many wonderful keepsakes for family and friends over the years that they will all cherish for years to come. Don had also spent three years studying with Word of Faith Bible College out of Dallas. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Purple Heart Association, the Indiana Blacksmith Association, Rural Smiths of Mid-America and Indiana Central Leather Guild.
Don was preceded in death by his dear brother, Ron Kern. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sharon (Ford) Kern; beloved children, Rodney Kern and Anissa (James) Sweeney; dear brother, Mike (Joyce) Kern; dear sister-in-law, Natasha Kern; five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Don’s life will be announced in the days ahead.
