

David Mark Gibson, 91, of Indianapolis, IN, died January 20, 2015, due to complications from a fall. Born August 7, 1923 in Kokomo, IN, he was the son of Carl Banta and Marie (Loop) Gibson. He moved with his parents, and brother John to Mansfield, Ohio in 1929 where he lived until 1941. In 1944 he completed the A.B. degree at Wabash College (Indiana), and in 1948 he earned an M.D. degree at Harvard Medical School (Boston).
After an internship with Northwestern University Hospital (Chicago) Dr. Gibson undertook eight years of postdoctoral research at the University of Illinois (Urbana) and University of Wisconsin Enzyme Institute (Madison). Dr. Gibson was a professor of biochemistry at Indiana University School of Medicine (Indianapolis) from 1958 until retirement in 1992, during which period he served as departmental chairman for over 20 years. Dr. Gibson was the first recipient of the Grace M. Showalter Professorship in 1975. He was also the recipient of numerous medical school teaching awards and national fellowships related to diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Gibson was the coauthor of the biochemistry textbook, Metabolic Regulation in Mammals (2002), along with many professional research publications. Visiting professorships were carried out in the universities of Padua (Italy), Utrecht (Netherlands), Ankara (Turkey), and Oxford (England).
On June 2, 1951, David married Margaret Isabelle Lockhart (Rocanville, Saskatchewan) in Chicago (deceased April, 9, 1992). David and Margaret met at Wesley Memorial Hospital in Chicago, during his internship as a medical doctor. Margaret was a nurse who completed her training at the Mesericordia School of Nursing in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Upon her passing, David married Wilda Lee Preston of Mansfield, Ohio on July 7th, 2001. (deceased Sept. 3, 2014). David is survived by his brother, John Skyler (Nancy) Gibson. He is also survived by his five children and nine grandchildren, all of Indianapolis: Carl L. Gibson (Patricia Slater): Anne, Christopher and Eileen Gibson; John L. Gibson; Shauna Marie Gibson: Dr. Katherine (Brandon) Miller, Dr. Joseph (Natalie) Kopp and Heather (Austin) Parrish ; Heather (Joseph) Garrison: Samuel and Marina Garrison; Mark C. Gibson (Laura Doolittle): Margaret. David is also survived by Lee’s three children, Burton (Prue) Preston; Brad (Betty) Preston; Wendy (Randy) Roper, five step-grandsons, and three step-great grandchildren.
Returning to Mansfield in 2001, Dr. Gibson was a member of the Hermits Club, the 51 Club and The First Congregational Church of Mansfield.
