Ed would have been eighty-eight years old today, on April 14, 2016.  He always loved to say he shared his birthday with the sinking of the Titanic and the assassination of J. F. Kennedy. Since eights represent infinity, it's the perfect day to remember the good times with Potter, and other calamitous events!  Awa! Awa!

I knew Ed for the last 10 Years as a member of the Eli Lilly's Post 374, American Legion.  What a fine fellow.  I always enjoyed his wit and advice.  We will miss him greatly. RIP, I tip my glass to you Friend.

Mr. Potter was our patient and friend at IU West Outpatient Laboratory. He was always a bright spot in our day sharing with each of us stories of all his travels, military experiences, family, and music! Always had a smile to share, a kind word, and bits of wisdom! He always made sure he saw and asked how each of us were doing before he would leave. A wonderful Soul! We were all very shocked and saddened by his passing. Our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. We will all miss him very much and will always remember him for the wonderful person he was.

While he sang with the Hartsmen, Ed was close enough to our family that my sister and I didn't know that we weren't really related until nearly middle school.  We called him "Uncle Powder" because we didn't know what a Potter was.  (This was years before Harry became famous.)
I was taught about jazz from a true aficionado.  Ed was stationed in NYC in the 50's and frequented those iconic jazz clubs.  Some of his best memories were of Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh inviting him in uniform to their table.  He saw Marian McPartland so often that she recognized him twenty years later when he caught her show.  
For over twenty years, Ed and I exchanged music from Dixieland to Swing and saw great jazz twice a year when he visited Naples.  At my house, those were always called a "Potter Week" .  I will miss him.   Tammy (Sturgeon) Jones

Ed was my father's Best Man and Best Friend.  I feel like I've lost a family member as I've known Ed my entire life.  I find comfort knowing he always lived his life to the fullest.  He appreciated good music, good food and good beer.  He was well educated, well traveled and a great tenor.  For over 25 years.. Ed made the trek from Indianapolis to South Florida to share Thanksgiving and Easter at our table and always brought the flowers!  Each year he would bring amazing photos of his world travel and update us on his next adventure!  I will cherish those memories and all the good times.. forever.

Uncle Harris, We have many years and stories and adventures we share. I will miss our times together. You were a self made man and I was always proud of you. The best were the talks we had about the Lord. And your trip to the Holy Land. From those talks I have the peace knowing you are with Jesus. I know you are "Resting in peace!" I will see you one day on the other side. I love you, Barbie-74 year old niece. xoxo

Ed has been a true friend to our family.  You shared your love of knowledge to improve lives through medical research.  You shared your love for this country through military service and lifelong support of military organizations.  You shared your love for those less fortunate through generosity to missions and the humane society.  You shared your love of adventure through travel and the many stories they brought.  You shared your love of the arts through your musical talent with The Barbershop Harmony Society and the Hartsmen.  You loved life and lived it to the fullest.  Anyone could say, or sing, "I Did It My Way" when describing Ed.  My family would agree.  Alice Sturgeon

Ed and I were good friends back in the 60's and early 70's when he was active in the Barbershop Singing Society and occasionally roomed together at District Conventions. We first met at the 1963 Barbershop Convention in Toronto when I was in the process of transferring from Niagara Falls, NY, to Indianapolis. In  recent years, we occasionally met for dinner or more frequently chatted on the phone.  I'm sorry he passed away and extend my sympathy to his family. Chuck McKinsey.
