With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the peaceful passing of Elmars Berzins on May 21, 2025, at the age of 97.
Born in Rauna, Latvia, Elmars fled his beloved homeland during the dark days of Soviet occupation, courageously seeking freedom and a future beyond war’s reach. He arrived in Germany in 1944, where he continued his education and worked as a chauffeur. In 1949, he embarked on a new life in the United States, settling in New Castle, Indiana, through a work sponsorship as a bulldozer operator.
Elmars built a meaningful life in Indianapolis, where he became an esteemed tool and die maker at Wallace Expanding Machines. His talents led him overseas to assist in setting up machine production—a testament to his dedication and craftsmanship. Following the company's closure, he continued his trade at Creative Machining Concepts, Inc. in Westfield, IN, working with pride until his retirement at the remarkable age of 83.
A proud American citizen, Elmars never lost his deep connection to his Latvian heritage. He was an active member of the Indianapolis Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church, where his faith anchored him. He sang in the Indiana Latvian Choir and shared his love of music as the accordionist and founder of the band Atmiņas—filling halls with polkas and waltzes that brought joy to many. A man of many talents, Elmars also found passion in photography, writing poetry for friends’ celebrations, and lending his skills in mechanics and electrical work.
Elmars' legacy is one of faith, family, and unwavering determination. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him, especially his wife, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who were blessed to share in the warmth of his love and the strength of his spirit.
Elmars is survived by his wife of seventy-two years, Vilma, and his daughters Aina (Tom) Little and Rasma (Gunars) Kancs. He was the very proud grandfather of Jennifer (Pete) Needler, Amanda (Rob) Butler, Maris (Anna) Kancs, Jacob (Chrissy) Little, and Iveta Kancs and loved dearly by eight great-grandchildren Rolans, Abigail, Kaija, Ryan, Bennett, Archer, Claire, and Poppy.
A private family memorial service honoring Elmars’ life will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, with interment at Crown Hill Mausoleum on Thursday, May, 29, 2025.
Donations in his honor may be made to the Indianapolis Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church (220 3rd Avenue NE, Carmel, IN 46032), Latvian Welfare Association (Daugavas Vanagi) of Indianapolis (1334 Holden Ct, Carmel, IN 46032), or Latvian Center Garezers (57732 Lone Tree Rd, Three Rivers, MI 49093).
