Gary L. Mier, 62, passed September 11, 2015, at his residence. Gary was born April 8, 1953, in Oxford, Ohio, and was a 1971 graduate of Warren Central High School. Gary graduated from Indiana University, and he worked for Eli Lilly for more than 15 years. Gary loved fishing, reading, shooting, guitar collecting, pool playing, gambling, traveling, watching Star Trek, doting on his beautiful wife, spoiling his grandchildren, taking a beating in tennis from both his son and son-in-law, stealing cookies from his son-in-law, finding a good bargain in the clearance racks, and wearing his camel hair jacket with elbow protectors. Gary was always the gentleman, and he had an uncanny ability to make everyone, both friends and strangers, feel like they were part of his family. Gary was a hero, rock of strength, voice of reason, and constant source of laughter to his family. Gary was bound by a sense of duty and always thought of others before himself.
Gary is survived by his wife of 37 years, Frances Mier; his son, Tony Johnson; his daughter, Joni Strahl (Chris); his brother, Larry Mier (Debbie); his mother, Violet Mier; four grandchildren that were the apple of his eye - Cory Johnson, Gabby Johnson, Rhiannon Strahl, and Audrey Strahl; and his furry daughters, Foxy Lady and Nina Lee. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Robert Mier; his father-in-law, Eddie Schultz; his mother-in-law, Nadine Schultz; his brother-in-law and pool-buddy-for-life, David P. Schultz; and his sister-in-law, Penny Hines. The family would also like to honor a very special angel, Kathy Allison, Gary’s sister-in-law. Kathy has been a huge source of strength, compassion, and caring to Gary, Frances, and the family during Gary’s passing. She has been the light that brightened the darkest hours. The family cannot ever thank her enough for her selfless acts of care.
Please join the family in celebrating Gary’s life at Little & Sons Funeral Home located at 4901 E Stop 11 Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46237, on Friday, September 18, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Franciscan Alliance Foundation Central Indiana, 5255 E. In the immortal words of Spock, and the mantra to which Gary lived his life, “Live Long and Prosper.”
