Gloria Jean Acoff

Gloria attended public school in Sandy Hook, MS, graduating from Friendship High School in 1959. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education from Alcon State University, Lorman, MS and her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from IUPUI, Indianapolis, Indiana. She utilized her educational degrees working in Bay St. Louis School System, Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, Covington County School System, in Mt. Olive, MS.

Moving to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1979, she continued her teaching profession for the Indianapolis Public System and Southport Elementary School-Perry Township until her retirement in 2004.

Growing up in Mt. Olive, MS, she attended Mt. Pleasant C.M.E. Church. She was a member of the Missionary Society and Heroines of Jericho. After moving to Indy in 1979, she joined Trinity C.M.E. Church. She was a member of the Trinity Missionary Society (Dorcas Guild), working with the Food Pantry, member of the Golden Years Ministry and worked in the Nursery. She was also an instructor in Vacation Bible School, and she was a faithful member until her health kept her from attending church, but she “Loved” her church.

Gloria, affectionately known as “Glo” is married to Elijah Acoff and to this union no children were born, but she was a “MOM” to her nephews, her neighbors and their children.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, of 30+ years, Elijah Acoff, her sister Mary Gwendolyn Staten, brothers-in-law Clifford and Floyd Acoff. Her special sisters are Sandra Smith, Myra Jean Duff, and Georgann Mitchell and her adopted neighbor/daughter, Sherry Barney and children Ravine and Rashard. Nephews Phil Mark (Melissa), Steven Staten (Trina), Thomas Edwards (Dorothy), Christian Staten, and Walter Staten, Jr and a host of relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held at Trinity C.M.E. Church, located at 2253 Dr Andrew J Brown Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46205, on December 12, 2025, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Following the visitation, a Celebration of Life will take place at the same location, beginning at 12:00 pm.
