

92, of Indianapolis, passed away on August 21, 2020. James was born on February 20, 1928, to the late Willis and Glenna Smith. James grew up in Bloomfield, Indiana and was raised on his parents’ farm. He attended Bloomfield High School and was in the graduating class of 1946. James married Nancy in 1950 and went on to have four children. James worked as an Underground Testing Inspector for IPL, retiring in 1992. James loved his time coaching Garfield Park Little League when he was younger and did so for seven years. He was also a member of Prospect Masonic Lodge for 66 years and The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers #481 for 44 years. He was a member of LifePoint Church for many years and served as a greeter there for over 20 years. He operated a small engine repair service out of his garage later in his career and after his retirement. He loved to chit-chat with anyone that came by and never knew a stranger.
James is survived by his loving Wife of 70 years; Nancy (Patterson) Smith, Children; Michael S. (Susan) Smith, of Bath, Pennsylvania, Kathryn S. Cartheuser, of Indianapolis, Susan M. (Charles) Madden, of Indianapolis and Linda J. (Jesse) Speight, of Indianapolis, Grandchildren; Kyle J. (Amanda) Cartheuser, of Edmond, Oklahoma, Kristin M.B. (Nathan) Bingham, of Indianapolis, Aaron C. Bledsoe, of Columbus, Ohio, Michael A. George, of Nazareth, Pennsylvania, Ryan E. George, of Bath, Pennsylvania, Charles E. (Shannon) Madden III, of Poughkeepsie, New York and Great-Grandchildren; Jackson J. Cartheuser, Theodore C. Bingham, Leah R. Cartheuser, Cordelia M. Bingham, Avery K. Madden and Charles E. Madden IV.
Visitation will be held at LifePoint Church (8540 Combs Rd., Indianapolis, IN. 46237) on Saturday, August 29, 2020 from 11:30am - 1:00pm. Funeral services will be immediately following at 1:00pm at the church. Burial will take place at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Greenwood. A Christian Interment service and a Masonic Interment service will be held graveside
For the safety of yourself and others masks will be required inside the church and at the graveside.
