John joined the US Navy at age 17, and served until he was 20 years old. Shortly after his time in the military, John married Mary Berens and together they raised 2 children. He was an active member of St. Paul Episcopal Church. He was a member of their endowment committee and also spent time hosting senior education classes.
John was one of the lucky ones, and he retired at the young age of 55. He spent a lot of hours golfing and reading. He had a mountain of books in his basement.
He loved spending time with his kids and his grandkids. John never missed a sporting event, and was always their unofficial coach.
John is survived by his loving children Glenn (Cindy) Harkness and Amy (Brad) Flinders; brothers Bob (Liz) Harkness and Dave (Terry) Harkness; brother-in-law, Bill (Barb) Berens and grateful grandchildren, Natalie, Abby, Adam, Ian, Katie and Megan; several nieces and nephews and a host of beloved longtime friends.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years Mary Harkness.
A memorial visitation for John will be held Friday, June 17, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 6050 N Meridian St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM.
