Just learned of John's passing,thoughts and prayers are with his family.A very thoughtful and a wonderful person,he will be missed.

From the time I was a junior medical student, John has always been the constant every year on my VA ward experience. sub I to intern to resident and once more last year; I was really looking forward to working with him as staff next year. His sense of humor and indomitable energy helped create a better work environment every day he was there. He will be sorely missed by all.

So sorry to hear about John! He and Felisa bought their house from us back in 2002, and they seemed so excited to get that house! They seemed like such a happy couple. Bless you, Felisa, may God grant you the comfort that you need!

Rotating at the VA was synonymous with seeing and working with John. He was such a bright spot on even the toughest day and worked tirelessly for the veterans. He will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear of John's passing. He was a valued co-worker at the VAMC and he will be greatly missed.

John in so many ways represented social work well at our VA hospital. He touched so many lives from the patients he served, to the numerous social workers he helped train, the medical students he nurtured, and the vendors he always took time to introduce to staff.

He was always generous in sharing information and offering to help problem solve when we came across a difficult situation. He was dedicated to his profession and enjoyed his work.

I was so happy to meet his lovely family at his services yesterday and see the love he shared with his wife, sister and aunt. He will be missed by us here at the VA. He was an exceptional person.

Among residents, the experience at the VA has become synonomous with the pleasure of knowing John Livengood. We have all benefited from his generous gifts of snacks and toys along with his great stories and booming laughter.  I will never forget the spirited way with which he marched into the team rooms each morning announcing "tele, tele, tele, who's on tele!" I will always smile when I think of John Livengood. He was such a blessing to so many staff and residents. He will be sorely missed.

In life there are many people we say we cant live without but very seldom is there a person that we cannot function without. John was that guy. Often times I would come home from work and tell my wife how the day was at the va...most days would include a   story about how John once again saved the day and often times   our sanity!  He makes such a huge impact that when prospective  residents come to town and ask us about our program...we tell  them about John and how through him just about anything was  possible.  He was the heart and soul of the va and litterally cannot  be replaced. I feel fortunate and blest to have been able to have  worked with John.  My heart goes out Felisa and the rest of his  family. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

John worked tirelessly for the veterans he served, while helping many generations of Indiana University medical students and residents discover the importance of discharge planning.  He will be greatly missed.

I cannot say how much I miss John and his encouragement through his incredible work ethic, remarkable gifts of goodies and toys and his breadth of expertise in discharge planning.  He is the type of worker any organization would want and was a wonderful friend as well. I valued his opinion highly. My prayers are with his family at this time.

I remember John from my time as a medical student on the VA wards and feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him as an attending.  He will be remembered for his giving spirit, his selflessness, his charisma and incredible work ethic.  I will personally never forget his attention to detail and how he always remembered to bring me catnip from his garden while on service.  His dedication to the Veterans was exemplary and he was an absolutely vital part of the inpatient team.  He will be missed more than words can say and is gone too soon. Thank you, John, for touching so many lives. My most sincere condolences to his family and close friends.

John had a passion for helping the most vulnerable in his community and caring for the needs that so often went overlooked by others.  He touched all of those with whom he worked and leaves us with some great memories and stories.  Wishes for peace to his family in this difficult time.

  There is a saying "some footprints enter your life for a season, some for a reason.  John's will be on the hearts of many for a life time.

John was one of the most fantastic guys I ever worked with. He was very lively and generous. I always appreciated his work ethics. He would get things done no matter how hard they are. He touched the lives of every one he worked with. My condolences to his family.

I had the pleasure of working with John when he first started at the VA and for many years in discharge planning. He was an awesome social worker, who truly cared for the veterans and his Teams. You could always tell John was present because he always had a joke or humorous story to tell. I can still hear his chuckle like laughter, which would always make one smile.   My condolences to John's wife and family.  John will be truly missed!!!

John was a remarkable man. I was fortunate to work with him from his earliest days at the Roudebush VAMC. He was THE most selfless person I know. He was extremely perceptive and observant of others' needs and preferences. He was generous to all, including innumerable patients and their families, as well as countless residents and medical students whose lives he touched, often anonymously. He brought infectious energy, optimism, and enthusiasm to all that he did. He had a unique and free-spirited persona that surrounded a reflective and inquisitive inner self. He performed his job in a most helpful manner, with great efficiency and attention to detail. He was one of THE most effective people at the VAMC. Patients and their families will miss his dedication and service. His colleagues will miss his cheerfulness, wide-ranging knowledge, thoughtfulness, and friendship. His loss leaves a huge irreparable hole in the fabric of our institution and in our hearts. Godspeed, John. My sincerest condolences to his wife and family.

I have known John my entire time at the VA. I have never met anyone as dedicated, knowledgeable,  genuine, and compassionate as John. He truly lead by example. He will be greatly missed by everyone he has crossed paths with. My condolences to his family and friends.

I had the pleasure of working with John first as a pharmacy student on his medicine team then as a staff pharmacist.  I was always impressed by John's generousity and good will, even during trying times. My condolences to his family. He will be missed by many.

I was fortunate enough to have his office the across the hall from the union office.   Always, giving a friendly salutation to all, followed by a quick-witted,  and down to earth, commentary on the action of the day of the ward, the VA will greatly miss his services as a Social Worker.  What I will miss the most is support for his fellow co-workers, his hard work ethic , and loyalty to veterans to assure they understood their benefits.   He made it work.  Thank you John Livengood my life was enriched from your presence.

I cannot think of John without thinking of how resourefully knowledgeable & generously free-hearted he was... John's distinct voice, cologne & tie collection will live on in us all! 

He shared tons of "did-you-know" stories with me and my latest memory is of him describing how difficult probabe could be... John personally & professionally MASTERED his craft while serving our Veterans & is surely a great loss to all that have encountered him. ~ Stacy C

My father, a Pearl Harbor survivor, was one of John's cases. John continued to offer heartfelt expertise long after it was part of his job. Sincere condolences to his family. You must have been so proud of this gentle but determined good man.

John was my co-worker at VA Hospital. I didn't know him extremely well, but enjoyed his presence and the joy that he brought to others. He took excellent care of his fellow veterans as well as his colleagues. He kept his team room packed with a smorgasbord of treats as well as fun items which lightened the spirit and nourished the soul,  as well as the bodies(including mine) that worked long hours with little nourishment. I remember one night, I was at the hospital really late, and was emotionally and physically beat, not to mention famished. I walked to his team room praying that I would find something healthy. I opened the door and felt immediately better, being cheered by the fun ambience in the room: the huge fluffy dragon in the corner, multiple pink haired trolls, scattered toys, and John's usual smorgasbord of sweet goodies.  I found two packages of almonds and ate them both. When I saw John later and was expressing my appreciation, he struck me as shy.  I remember thinking, “He's kind of a shy guy with a huge heart.”  He was a unique man who was truly loved and will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and colleagues. Rest in peace John.

We are very sad to learn of John's passing.  He was a kind, generous, and genuinely good person.  There are not enough people like John in this world.  He will be missed by us and so many others.  Rest in peace, John!

So sad when I heard that John passed away.  I worked with him at the VA Medical Center.  No words can explain what an awesome, caring, and oohh so funny guy he was.
