Katharine Brady Sutphin, 59, passed away in Indianapolis on Sept. 7, 2014. She attended Tudor Hall School and Colorado Rocky Mtn. School before graduating from California Institute of the Arts. Cerulean red, indigo whiteâ€"Katie created a palette of colors in a swirl belonging to her aloneâ€"Katie Chaos, unique under god, the sibling I loved and will forever miss. From a Cal Arts pal-- â€?"Not only were you a beautiful girl from Indy, but arrived with singing lessons, playing guitar and piano, a passion for painting and an artistic vision, strong thought of mind, a swimmers body, a bundle of energy with exciting blue eyes. In the seventies you explored the New York Art scene, suited to you as far as concept of paintings and love of networking night-life. You had lofts in Tribecca and Soho in the heart of everything artistic.â€
From a high school mateâ€" â€?"After Los Angeles, Katie moved to Tribeca before it was fashionable, bought a loft, set up a studio. Katie always seemed to be on the cutting edge, and in many areas, she was ahead of her time. Her legendary and abiding love of animals, horses and canines, was a driving force. If she wasn’t saving dogs or cats (or squirrels and moles), nursing them back, she was at the track looking for a thoroughbred she could breed or train. Above all, she was a compassionate and understanding friend. I can’t tell you the countless times I called in need of advice and caring. She was always there. I shall never forget my friend. Her company was magical: a beautiful lady who will live forever in my heart.â€
A pal from early years: â€?"The part I liked best as a young girl, Katie looked odd in a dress, you see Katie was never of common fashion. Katie was best with making others feel good: her beauty was an energy, an appreciation: she made the social real, that happy hippy-artist girl. A natural beauty, Katie was without contrivance, inclusive, and gave understanding freely, like wind, a spirit to kite the cloudsâ€"and she was fun. When she was young , her personality was so much herself, she couldn’t be defined by clothes, she wasn’t the wrapping and wasn’t going to allow herself to be put in a box. Today I keep thinking about lola dog: I’d be happy if she was with you, maybe to bite a doctor or two. I am blessed I had a friend like Katie.â€
Her last great companion who lived with her in New York and on the fabled farm in Paris, KY writes, "Katie was a strong-willed woman who wasn’t afraid to blaze her own trail. Her kindness and compassion were legendry. She never turned her back on those in need. The world will miss her -- as will I.†As will we all. Survivors include a marital companion, a brother, a niece, a nephew and five cousins.
