Lavell Ray Finley

91, passed away peacefully in her home with her family gathered around on April 12, 2020. She was born September 4, 1928 in Scottsville Kentucky to Mortie and Alice Gregory. Lavelle married Elzory King Mayes in January of 1949 who preceded her in death in 1971. She then married James (Jack) H. Finley in 1973 and enjoy 44 years of marriage together. Jack proceeded her in death in 2017.

Lavell (or Love as her Grandkids called her) really enjoyed people. If she hadn’t seen you in a while, she would sure let you know all about it. She was a devote mom, wife and most of all Grandmother. Love enjoyed spending time in the kitchen and in the garden. No one can make Fried Apples like Love! She and Jack enjoyed Traveling together, camping and spending time in their winter home in Florida. But anyone who knows Love, knew she was happiest sitting around a card table playing cards and talking about old times.

For many years Lavell worked at RCA in Indianapolis retiring from work life in 1987. She indulged her servant heart by helping out at Southeastern Church of Christ educating today’s youth in why wearing a white shirt and tie was a reflection of their best self. Lavell was active in Senior Servants, small group bible studies and organizing social gatherings everywhere she went. Hosting 75 people in her garage was a good idea in Lavelle’s mind. One of Lavell’s favorite bible verse was Ecclesiastes 3: 1 — “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

Lavell is survived by her daughter and son in law Linda and John Shepherd, son and daughter in law Roger and Kerry Mayes, 6 grandchildren: Rodney Shepherd, Ryan Shepherd, Amanda Lumpkin, Rachel Weidner, Andy Tucker and Stephen Tucker, 7 great grandchildren: Keirsten, Makena, Brody, Brinley, Lilly, Werner and Alec, and 2 great great grandchildren: Parker and Micah. All of these she loved and touched deeply.

A Memorial Gathering will be held at Southeastern Church of Christ on Saturday, July 11, 2020 from 10:00 am - 11:00am followed by a Memorial Service at the Church at 11:00 am. Pastor Greg York will be officiating the Service.

Well Gram here we are celebrating your life. You and I have had so many laughs and life lessons together, I’m not sure what I’ll do without you. I already miss your voice, smile, and most of all your lovely smell #perfumefordays
All of my childhood memories have come flooding back, from cards on the patio, potato chips and French onion dip, counting cars, and those countless times just sitting on the yard swing talking. I have vivid memories of you singing good night Irene to Rachel and I every night before bed. To this day I don’t know where that song came from but it’s stuck with me and I sing those words every night to Alec. Love, you will be in my heart forever and I hope to teach Alec all the things you taught me. I know you are where you want to be in the Lords presence. My little left hand I will be happy to see you the next time we meet. Tell Grandpa HI and give him a squeeze from me.
Love your granddaughter, ❤️🙌🏻AMANDA

Lavell was not only my sister in Christ but my sister at heart. She so loved being with her friends whether it be playing cards, sharing a meal or just sitting in her garage and sharing memories. She was a true joy to be with. She loved to cook for her friends. I remember a 4th of July cookout that was filled with so much love, friendship and laughs. I will truly miss you Lavell.

Lavell knew how to be a friend forever! She loved playing and being with her friends. I loved working with her during our preschool days. She always made me wear my lipstick 💄. Her smile was beautiful!

Thank you Lavelle for being like a second Mama to me. I so much appreciate you and the things you did when I was very young that has lead me to Christ. 52 years of walking with our Lord. I love you Lavelle and I will bring your peaches back with me when I meet you on the other side of Jordan.

Our hearts are broken
The last time we spoke on the phone she said "if I don't see you again I will meet you in Heaven"
She was a true loving friend.
We will miss the phone conversations we had with her.

Love to all the family,
Jim & Joyce Wilson
