Lawrence Hooks, age 89, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. Lawrence was born July 20, 1934, in Indianapolis to the late Sally Pauline (Crenshaw) Hooks and Joseph Edwin Hooks. He is preceded in death by his beloved spouse, Lenora Hooks, son Lawrence Earl Hooks, brother Edwin Hooks, brother James Hooks, brother Paul Hooks. His sister, Donna (Hooks) Collier has also joined him in Glory.
Lawrence attended IPS 37 and was a 1953 graduate of Crispus Attucks High School, and later attended IUPUI. He was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served as a cook, and worked for Calderon Bros. Vending before working for the Ford Motor Company where he was employed for 35 years. After his retirement from Ford, Lawrence worked for the Mt. Zion Apartments doing maintenance, keeping things running and humming no matter what time the call came in and no matter the weather.
His main focus and chief enjoyment in life was spending time with the love of his life, Lenora, and being an excellent father to his four children. He often spent summers at Douglas Little League helping to coach and cheer on his two sons, Lawrence E. and Jay or attending their football games and wrestling matches in the Fall. He was also active in his daughter’s academic and extracurricular activities, attending Sharon’s performances with her high school choir and the Broad Ripple High School football and basketball games where Charla performed as a cheerleader.
Lawrence accepted the Lord at an early age and was dedicated in his service to God. He became a member of the Mt. Zion Diaconate in 1961 and for a time was Chairman of Deacons. He was also active in the Sunday School and was a member of the Unity Sunday School class. He was a member of the Laymen’s Ministry and of the Goldenaires club. Lawrence loved singing and was a long-time member of both the Mt. Zion Greeters and the Male Chorus.
Lawrence was an avid bowler and was in several leagues during his lifetime. He also, like his wife, was a fan of the Indiana Pacers and the Indianapolis Colts. Not being a fair-weather fan, he backed both teams thru the good and the bad, but the Colts 2007 Super Bowl win was a high point for him.
Lawrence is survived by three of his children, Sharon Lee Hooks, Jay Paul Hooks (Vicky), and Charla Marie Hooks, daughter-in-law Elaine, sister-in-law Rosetta Mathis, grandchildren Eric, Patricia, Alicia, April, Eddie, Dwayne, Omar, Dion, Tyler, Chase, Sean, numerous great-grandchildren, his Mt. Zion church family and a host of extended family and friends.
A visitation for Lawrence will be held Wednesday, July 31, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, followed by a Celebration of Life at 12:00 PM.
