Marvetta Grimes was born on Aug 20, 1966 in Evansville, IN to Wanda Clardy Grimes and Herbert E. Grimes. She was the second of 3 children, nestled between brother Michael and sister Sharron Grimes. She departed this life on Tuesday, May 10, 2023 in Indianapolis, IN. Shortly after Sharron was born, the family relocated to Michigan City, IN for a better employment opportunity for her father at Bethlehem Steele.
Marvetta completed her education in Michigan City, attending both Michigan City and Rogers High Schools. In her words. She had “unfortunate past experiences” that spanned several years. But by the Grace of God in the person of Father Glenn O'Connor and the Seeds of Hope program, she was able to turn a life of addiction into a life of service to others. Her journey to recovery started on October 24, 1999. She was in the second group of residents, and was determined to turn her life around and reunite her family. “Today, I have a relationship with my Higher Power, my family, and the countless number of people I’ve met through Seeds of Hope.”
Marvetta has been instrumental to the growth and success of Seeds of Hope since its inception in 1999. First graduating from the program in 2000 and continuing as house manager, director and ultimately Executive Director. Marvetta's passionate approach to recovery was rooted in her own personal experiences. She walked in the shoes of all the ladies who followed her. Over 800 women turned to Seeds of Hope for help while Marvetta was there providing support, compassion and guidance to all who needed her help. Marvetta was instrumental in the development of the Fr. Glenn O'Connor three quarter home providing women a place to live after completing their recovery program at Seeds of Hope. That accomplishment was not enough as Marvetta insisted that Seeds of Hope continue expanding its mission to include helping women in recovery and their children. That phase is now underway and will be named
the Marvetta and Anthony Grimes Family Center in honor of Marvetta and her son who died in foster care while Marvetta was struggling with her addictions. Marvetta was a remarkable woman and will be greatly missed by all who knew her, especially the Seeds of Hope family. We are certain that Marvetta and Fr. Glenn are now in heaven, probably at a craps table! Preceding Marvetta in death were her toddler son, Anthony Grimes. Her parents, Wanda and Herbert Grimes. Siblings, Michael and Sharron Grimes, Aunt Norma Jean Clardy and Uncle Kale Wayne (Viola) Clardy. Paternal Grandparents, Herbert and Margaret Grimes from Evansville, IN.
Left to mourn are her children, Bethany Lambert, Charles Lambert, Knoiya Hurst, Jeremy and Jerome Hillard, and her nephew/son, Malik Grimes, Nephew, Michael Grimes. Grandchildren, Ma’Kiya Grimes, Mariyah Grimes, Ma’khi Grimes, Brycen Lambert, Ka-El Mays and James Hillard. Aunts, Barbara Arnold (Detroit, MI), Linda (John) Watson (Queen Creek, AZ), Phyllis Grimes and Demitra (Leon) Savage (Phoenix, AZ). She also leaves a host of cousins and friends.
