Mary Alice Hamler was born on June 11, 1932, in Irwin County, Georgia to Rev. Frank Williams and Minnie Mae Jordan Williams. She was one of eight children. She joined St. John Baptist Church in Wray, Georgia and remained a member until moving to Indianapolis and joining St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church.
Mary Alice married Otha Hamler, in 1977 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She departed this life on December 11, 2021, at the age of 89.
Growing up, in Wray, Georgia, Mary Alice and her sister, Doretha (“Doe”), were constant companions; so much so that when Doretha started school, she would come home and teach Mary Alice everything she had learned. Thereafter, she attended South Georgia College in the LPN program. After graduating, she worked at Irwin County Hospital in Ocilla, Georgia. She also worked at Dorminy Memorial Hospital in Fitzgerald, Georgia. Over the years she was employed at various health care facilities in Indianapolis.
Mary Alice was a generous, loving, and compassionate Christian woman, always helping family, friends, and strangers in practical ways, including raising some of her nieces in her home. She, along with Doretha, would play games, such as shoe races with the children in the family and the neighborhood.
Mary Alice was a stylish dresser, always matching from head to toe in suits and the finest of hats.
Mary Alice was preceded in death by her husband Otha, her mother and father, her sister Veolia Williams, her brother Robert Williams, her sister Annie Johnson, her brother Theodore Williams, her sister Arie Dunlap, and her step-sister Floris Brown.
