Mary was born in Roper, North Carolina on January 6th, 1934. She graduated from the Oxford Masonic Orphanage in 1951. She then graduated from the Rex School of Nursing in 1953.
In August 1953, she married Ray Rumer and to this union came three sons, Curtis, Todd “Pete”, and Paul. She and Ray were married for over 53 years until his passing in 2006.
Mary went on to spend over 40 years in nursing, servicing veterans at the Roudebush VA Hospital in Indianapolis. She was awarded as one of the National VA Nurses Of The Year in 1992. She also volunteered at TAB Recreation for over 30 years, Parkinson’s Awareness Association, International Association of Laryngectomees (IAL), Oxford Orphanage, and various veteran associations.
Mary leaves behind to cherish her memory three sons Curtis (Cheryl), Todd “Pete” (Mary Ruth), and Paul (Maureen), 9 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
Mary will be laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery following a private ceremony.
