Shirley Helen (Naylor) Dick, 88, passed away on June 8 surrounded by her loving daughter, Catherine (Dick) Van Dyke, granddaughter Paloma and son William Dick. She is preceded in death by her parents, Erna (Miller) and David Naylor, and by her brothers David and Paul. Shirley is survived by her siblings William and Lorna. She was married in 1950 in St. Bernard-Cincinnati, Ohio to George Melvin Dick of McClouth, Kan., who preceded her in death. She was the loving mother of Andrew (wife Ruth Ann, sons Anthony and Daniel), Catherine Van Dyke (daughter Paloma), David (Dick) Dixon (wife Patricia, daughters Emily and Denise), and William. She was like a second parent to her sister Lorna (husband Larry McGinnis), and a loving aunt to their two daughters Amanda (husband Steve Chiagouris) and Melissa (husband David Leavitt).
From stained glass lamps and customized leatherworks to heirloom quilts and hand-made dresses, Shirley was a lifelong artist who seemed to master each craft she attempted. Though she was a world class traveler, there was hardly ever a summer in which she didn’t find herself in a National Park or at some American landmark. In the final chapter of her great adventure she was cared for by Catherine, Paloma, and William. She enjoyed starting every morning by reading The Indianapolis Star and liked watching the geese in her backyard pond. With her open mind and heart, Shirley was always full of love, excitement, and surprises.
In honor with her wishes no services will be provided, but donations can be offered to the American Cancer Society.
