
Shirley Ann Woods

Shirley A. Woods departed this life April 12, 2015, at St. Vincent Hospital. She was born in Metcalfe County to the late Pendie and Zenna Sartin.
Shirley was a graduate of Lincoln Institute in Lincoln Ridge Kentucky. She then went to Glasgow School of Nursing and graduated in 1958.
After graduation she moved to Louisville where she started her nursing career.. She relocated to South Bend, Indiana and started working at St. Joseph Hospital.
While working in the Emergency room, she was informed by the members of the South Bend Police Department that they were accepting women on the police force.
She enjoyed her job at the hospital but decided to pursue new career and on November 1, 1970, Shirley joined the South Bend Police Department. She was the first Black female policewoman on the SBPD. She retired on February 20,1991.
Shirley loved crocheting, reading, cooking and collecting old first edition cookbooks.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memories, two children, Deborah Woods and Anthony Woods, two grandchildren, Ashton and Shontalae, a sister Bobbie (Dan) Lewis, a brother Roger (Dorothy) Sartin, aunts; Zella Burris, Myrtle Russell, Magnolia Hayes, Mary Love and one uncle, George (Sally) Shirley and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by one brother Charles Sartin.
She will truly be missed.
