Born: July 7, 1948 Died: June 26, 2021
An educator like his father, he remained a life long student, always seeking to know more. His library is a testament to that !
Born in Trinidad and Tobago, in 1967 Najja moved as a teen with his siblings, Dianne, Dwight, John and mother Enid to Toronto Canada. They would join their Aunt Angela already there. Here he would spend a major portion of his life.
As time progressed he would continue to pursue a higher education. Attending York University and University of Toronto he would eventually achieve his well earned PhD.
His family was always proud of his accomplishments ! When opportunity presented itself, he and his family, wife Ajao, daughter Njideka, moved to Indianapolis to take a position as an Assistant Professor of Labor Studies in 1994 at IUPUI.
He would eventually retire in 2018 as an Associate Professor of Sociology and Afro Studies at IUPUI. Najja’s face was always in a book of some kind, as a friend once said “ is this guy ever going to stop studying ”.
When he wasn’t studying or reading you could definitely find him cycling. This was a life long passion of his on both sides of the border and everyone knew that. He also loved his hats and had quite a collection. You could say he had one for every occasion. Other interest included Martial Arts, Caribbean Culture in all its forms, African Art, Music and of course his RX7, which brought him great joy !
Najja was always willing to lend a hand and be there for others if need be. With his passing there is a deep sense of loss, but we know he is on another journey and now at peace. He probably has a book in his hand.
He will surely be missed by family and friends that were in his orbit throughout his life. He now joins his beloved Ajao, together once again. Rest is yours Professor !
Anyone wishing to pay their respects can do so at Crown Hill Funeral Home on Saturday, July 3, between 4pm-6pm. All are welcome.
