

Robert Lee Chambers, of Indianapolis, passed away on April 13, 2023, in Indianapolis, Indiana at the young age of ?? As you all know, when you asked Robert how old he was, a typical response you would get from him would be, "I'm 45…going on 30."
Robert was born in Indianapolis to the late Robert Chambers and Ruby Chambers on July 27th 19_ _. Robert and his mother moved back to Corydon, Kentucky before his father's death. He went to school in Corydon, Kentucky, and graduated from Douglas High School. Robert was a veteran. He enlisted in the United States Navy. After completing his tour, he returned home and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He met the love of his life, Mary Dowdell, while stationed at Griffin Air Force Base in Rome, New York. Robert married Mary on October 1st, 1957 in Utica, New York. Robert later moved back to Indianapolis, Indiana, and worked for International Harvest. He later also worked at General Motors before leaving International Harvest after nine years. He worked for General Motors -Truck & Bus (now known as Metal and Fabrication) for 44 years before retiring.
He was heavily involved in community services utilizing his love for boxing while training the youth in boxing. Robert treated all of his boxers as family. He was a coach for amateur and pro boxers. Robert coached individuals at Douglas Park, Riverside Park, and Washington Park for over 40 years. He named his boxing club in honor of Sarge Johnson. Robert would bring boxers to and from the gym, take them to tournaments in and out of state, as well as taking trips out of the country to Europe, and Australia. Robert's Sarge Johnson Boxing Club won many individual and team awards over the years within the Indiana Golden Gloves.
Robert is preceded in death by his mother - Ruby Chambers, his father - Robert Chambers, his son - Robert Chambers, and his daughter - Carla (Chambers) Mercier.
Robert is survived by wife - Mary Chambers, daughter - Cheryl Chambers, sons - Archie Chambers, Ronnie Chambers, and Jabar Wright, and many loving extended family members.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Crown Hill Funeral Home with Pastor Jeffrey A. Johnson Sr. of Eastern Star Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Funeral Cemetery. Arrangements are by Crown Hill Funeral Home & Services.
