Shiela grew up on her parents family farm “The Shieling.” She was a beautiful, graceful, tomboy who loved animals of all kinds – especially her German Shepherds and horses. She was a member of the first graduating class of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic grade school and went on to St Agnes Academy Highschool. She then attended Maryville College in St Louis and later in life graduated from IUPUI with a degree in Physical Education.
While attending Maryville and making many lifelong friends Shiela began courting Bill Mooney, her true love. Shiela and Bill married in 1960 and built their family farm and home in the northeast corner of Indianapolis. They raised eight children in a home that was never quiet, instilling in each of them a steady sense of responsibility and joy for life. Many will remember the Mooney farm as a crazy revolving door of neighbors, children, animals, discussions around the dinner table, weddings, music, parties and all around liv’in at its best. Shiela was always quietly and calmly in charge and never lost the incredible poise and grace she exuded to everyone she met.
Mom loved music, reading, and animals; she was a truly nurturing, caring presence. After raising her children she taught English at I.U.P.U.I. and worked at Midwest Structural as their office manager. She carried her love of music and healthy living through her volunteer work; playing the organ at St. Lawrence and leading wellness and fitness classes at the JCC and North Central. She volunteered at the Women’s prison of Indianapolis where she taught quilting, and spent many wonderful volunteer hours at Miracle Place.
Shiela is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, William J. Mooney, brothers Thomas A. Moynahan, and Robert B. Moynahan( Brownie). She is survived by her two sisters and best friends; Maura Brogan and Mary Louise Turner. She is also survived by her eight children and 28 grandchildren: William J.
