Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Maurice and Martha Conley, Tim was a devoted brother to John (Gayle) Conley, Sara (William) Norman, and Paul (Doris) Conley.
He was the loving husband of Mary Conley and the proud father of Amanda Conley, Erin (Josh) Garvey, Michael (Lindsey) Conley, and Shelby (Brittany) Conley. One of his greatest joys came later in life, in the form of his cherished grandchildren: Gracelyn, Callie, Liam, Mason, and Stanley — his pride, his joy, his heart.
Tim Conley served the Indianapolis community with unwavering dedication for over 40 years, including 23 years as a police officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. In 2019, he retired from the force, but never from service. He continued to stand beside his brothers and sisters in blue, advocating especially for officers injured in the line of duty and those silently battling the wounds of PTSD.
On August 18, 2004, Tim’s heroism became known to the world when he bravely protected our streets from a gunman, an act that earned him the Medal of Valor, a Purple Heart, and the deep respect of a city. He was named Officer of the Year, inducted into the Red Cross Hall of Fame, and nominated for the RuthAnn Popcheff award but he never wore those honors for glory. He wore them for the people he loved and served.
To us, he was a hero long before he ever put on a badge. He was our protector — calming our fears, cheering us on, and grounding us with strength and quiet wisdom. Every time he walked out the door to serve, he looked us in the eyes and said, “I’ll come home.” And we believed him. We held him to that promise.
After the shooting, as we stood beside his hospital bed, he opened his eyes and whispered, “I told you I’d come home.” And he did. He came home to see us graduate, to walk his daughters down the aisle, to rock his grandbabies to sleep.
But even the bravest hearts carry burdens. Though he fought with all he had, the injuries he sustained — both visible and invisible — took a lasting toll. His final chapter was marked by courage, and love.
Today, while our hearts are broken, we are comforted by this: he kept his promise. He made it home, not just to us, but now to his eternal home, where he is finally at peace.
We ask our IMPD family, friends, and community to join us in honoring Tim, not just as an officer who gave everything in the line of duty, but as a husband, father, papaw, and friend who gave his entire life to those he loved.
Thank you for standing with us. Thank you for loving him. Thank you for carrying on the legacy of a man whose bravery was matched only by his heart.
Forever our hero.
Forever our Dad.
He made it home.
