Mr. Christopher Robert Maloney was born on September 14, 1958 in New York, NY to Robert Thomas and Grace Rosamond Maloney. Chris entered into eternal rest on April 12, 2017 at his residence in Jackson Heights, NY, he was 58 years old. Beloved son of Robert and Grace Maloney. Loving brother of Mark Maloney, Gina Borden and her husband George, and Kate Maloney. Dear uncle of Matthew Borden, Nicholas Borden, Alec Maloney, Lucas Maloney, and Maya Maloney. May he rest in peace.
Chris arrived as a first anniversary present to Bob and Grace Maloney on September 14, 1958. As the first Maloney grandchild, Chris was the leader of the generation joined by Mark, Gina, Kate and ten Maloney cousins.
Chris attended Blessed Sacrament School, where he developed enduring friendships with many who celebrate here today. In keeping with the Irish penchant for irony, those friends tagged him with the moniker “Moose” because he consistently vied for the head of the class procession as the second-shortest in his grade. The nickname stuck even after a tenth-grade growth spurt stretched him to over six feet tall. His father, who also stands near six feet tall, shared this strange turn of fate. This is only one of the ways that Chris honors his father and the Maloney heritage.
Most know of Chris’ passion for the Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers, and New York Yankees and Rangers. He was a proud New Yorker and connoisseur of news media, politics and TV lore. Chris disdained fair-weather fans of any genre, his convictions tattooed into permanence. Long before the current generation of baseball savants, Chris joined the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). Yet with all his knowledge of statistics, Chris did not approve of fantasy baseball, refusing numerous invitations to join the family league. Chris rooted for teams, not individuals. Chris shared his passion for baseball with everyone, especially nephews Matt, Nicky, Alec & Lucas and niece Maya.
Chris’ greatest joy was sharing music with friends. He attended hundreds, if not thousands, of Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers and other concerts over the years. He compiled thousands of concert tapes in cassettes, CDs and DVDs, committing playlists to memory. His bookcases are testament to these passions. Friends often received seminal works as presents.
Chris had broad interests. He was a serious history student, devouring volumes on WW II, mid-1900s military history and biography. He shared book recommendations freely. Through his interest in classic movies and foreign TV, his DVDs of Borgen, Luther, and Scott & Bailey opened a new world for us. His critical reviews, which always accompanied, were spot-on. Shrewdly, Chris collected old US paper currency before it grew in value. He was proud of his poker skills and abilities and his winnings routinely covered his yearly Vegas jaunts.
Chris was a great son, brother, and uncle to the Maloney/Borden family. He cared for his parents in Jackson Heights often, and visited his sisters in D.C. He travelled to Japan for his brother’s wedding. Chris loved hosting his nephews Alec and Lucas on their way to and from the US. Just as importantly, Chris was a caring and loving friend to all who knew him, especially his second family, the friends from the BSS days. Chris’ kind and generous nature really shone through when he was with them.
Christopher Robert Thomas Maloney was a kind and gentle soul, possessed of a sharp wit, strong convictions, and a sense of ethical fairness and morality rare in this world. We all will miss him.
