

Leon Franklin Gilbert, 92, passed away on June 4, 2015. Visitation will be held at Lakewood Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2015, and from10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at Lakewood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
Mr. Gilbert is survived by his wife, Beverly Ann Neff Gilbert, and daughters, Patricia Gilbert Smith and husband David and Kathryn Joy Gilbert West and husband Byron. He is also survived by his granddaughters Kelly Smith Dixon and husband Tripp and Lesley Smith Otts and husband Jeremy. Treasured great grandchildren are Caroline Dixon, Catherine Dixon, Camille Dixon, Smith Dixon, and Olivia Otts. Surviving family members also include his sister Juanita Owens, of Cleveland, Texas, and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was born on April 22, 1923 in the Magnolia Community, San Jacinto County, Texas, to the late Lee Franklin Gilbert and Icy Ophelia Gilbert. He was predeceased by sisters Lucille Vann, Estelle Jackson, and May Bell Gilbert, and brothers Odus, Cecil, Freelum, Truman, Borden, Lee, Glen, Roscoe, Buford, and Doyle Gilbert.
Mr. Gilbert was a district salesman for U.S. Steel/Cyclone Fence Division for 40 years, receiving many awards and recognitions. He was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church, Jackson, where he enjoyed serving as an usher and on the welcoming committee for many years. His favorite pastimes were spending time with his family and working in his vegetable garden. Each year he grew and harvested fresh produce for his family and to share with friends.
