Mary Gladys Brooks Tomlinson, age 99, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2013 in Garland, TX where she has lived for the past nine years. She was born on December 6, 1913 in Burnsville, MS to Thomas Martin and Nelle Kathryn Brooks. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 47 years, T. R. (Tommy) Tomlinson, son, T. Ray Tomlinson, and daughter, Kathryn Jane Tomlinson. She is survived by her daughter Mary Nell Robbs and husband Robert of Garland, TX, three grandchildren, Ann Marie Zettergren and husband Jeff of Senatobia, MS, Reed Tomlinson of Little Rock, AR, and Briley Tomlinson and wife Allison of Senatobia, MS. Gladys leaves seven great grandchildren, Josh, Jessica and Thomas Allen Zettergren, Vivian and Corinne Tomlinson, and Mary Brooks and Caroline Tomlinson. She is also survived by daughter-in-law, Gail S. Tomlinson of Senatobia, MS.
Gladys and Tommy moved from Corinth, MS to Jackson in 1940. They became members of the Central Church of Christ, and then charter members of Belvedere Church of Christ where Tommy served as an elder until his death in 1983. Gladys continued her faithful service to the church after the move in 1990 to the current Siwell Road Church of Christ. Gladys' final church home was Highland Oaks Church of Christ in Dallas. Gladys was baptized at age 17 and spent her life in service for the Lord, faithfully and continuously ministering to her family, friends, and neighbors. She was a dedicated homemaker and Bible school teacher. She loved music, especially the piano, enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading, and gardening vegetables and flowers. Cooking was one of her favorite activities and special gifts. She was able to minister to, as well as encourage, countless numbers of people by taking food to them in times of need. Gladys and Tommy loved to extend hospitality in their home, and she continued to enjoy doing so through her years of living alone in Jackson.
A memorial service to remember Gladys will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Siwell Road Church of Christ in Jackson. Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm. Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
