

Sadie was born on January 30, 1936, in Camden, Mississippi to Ruby and Walter Thomas. She graduated from Camden High School with honors. Sadie was class Valedictorian and named “4H Queen” for the class of 1954.
After high school Sadie graduated from the American Institute of Banking and began working at Deposit Guarantee Bank. There, she met and later married Paul Douglas Shirley. They had two children. As a young widow, she married Ralph Carroll and welcomed his daughter into their blended family.
Sadie excelled in homemaking responsibilities. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, decorating, and gardening. Under her supervision, the family won “Yard of the Month” multiple times. She was a caregiver to her parents and a devoted wife, mother, aunt, cousin, sister, and friend. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Grand-C.” Sadie’s style was straight out of a Southern Living Magazine, and she was the definition of a “Steel Magnolia.”
Sadie was a longtime member of First Baptist Church Clinton, Mississippi and taught in the preschool department for many years. She was active in the Mississippi College Faculty Wives Club and was a recipe tester for the Mississippi College Cookbook.
Sadie was preceded in death; by her parents, Ruby, and Walter Thomas; Sister, Esther Mederios and Brother John Thomas; First Husband, Paul Shirley; Second Husband, Ralph Carroll.
Sadie is survived by her daughters, Natasha Griffis (Tim) and Laurie Carroll, son, Doug Shirley (Kim). Grandchildren; Caitlin Heath (Jared), Zach Griffis (Katelyn), Luke Griffis (Erin), Garrett Shirley, Gavin Shirley, and Gracelynn Shirley. Great grandchildren; Griffis Heath, Linkon Heath, Scarlett Heath, Fitz Griffis, Theodore Griffis, Everett Griffis, and Ellie Griffis.
A Celebration of Life service will take place on May 30, 2026, at Lakewood Funeral Home and Memorial Park.
The family will receive visitors from 10:00-11:00. Service will take place at 11:00 with graveside service to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Baptist Children’s Village or the Dementia Society of America.
