Dr. Shelby Wilson Mitchell, Sr., 95, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. A graveside service will be held at Lakewood Memorial Park on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 9:30 AM.
Dr. Mitchell was born on December 8, 1918 in Wesson, MS to the late Lee and Josie Mitchell. He was a decorated Navy Pilot in WWII and retired in 1971 with the rank of Captain. He was a medical doctor and administrator with the Mississippi State Board of Health. Dr. Mitchell has been a Clinton resident for the past 44 years. He was a member of Old Vicksburg Road Baptist Church and the Lion’s Club.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dr. Maura Mitchell; daughter, Dr. Anna Covington-Flynn; brothers, James Mitchell, Frank Mitchell, and Carl Mitchell; sisters, Johnie Price, Nannie Gatlin, Mary Lee Flemming, and Lily Mae Mitchell.
Dr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Louise Barrentine Mitchell; son, Shelby Wilson Mitchell, Jr.; daughters, Gloria Jean Dean and Janet Marie Colson; step-son, Vincent Lenaz; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
