Wallace A. Clay, Jr., age 92, died September 12, 2013 at Jackson, Mississippi. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Alta Woods Baptist Church in Jackson, with visitation at the church from 9:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. prior to the service and burial in Lakewood Memorial Park following. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Clay was a native of Starkville, Mississippi, but left in 1940 when he joined the Army as a part of the Dixie 31st Division. He transferred to the Tank Destroyer Battalion. After serving in the European Theater, he was re-assigned to the Pacific Command. In 1950, he was recalled in the Korean Conflict and served in Munich, Germany until his discharge as a First Lieutenant in 1953.
Prior to moving to Crystal Springs, Mississippi in 1996, Mr. Clay had been a long-time resident of Jackson, Mississippi where he was store manager of Mills Morris Auto Parts, and later as a salesman for Carquest Auto Parts where he retired as Vice Chairman of the Board in 1990.
He had been a member of Alta Woods Baptist Church from 1950 to the present, where he had served as a teacher of youth, a deacon and chairman of ushers since 1953. He worked as a volunteer at Central Mississippi Medical Center for 20 years, retiring in 1991.
Mr. Clay was preceded in death by his first wife, Ernestine Clay; son, Billy Clay; half-sister, Mary Evelyn Clay, half-brother, Wendell Dobbins; parents, Wallace and Mamie Clay; step-mother, Bessie Clay. He is survived by his wife, Carol Pevey Clay; son and daughter-in-law, Wallace (Sonny) and Sheila Clay of Chillicothe, Texas; stepsons, Rick (Ruthie) Courtney of Madison, Mississippi; Scott (Pam) Courtney of Brandon, Mississippi; daughter-in-law, Linda Clay of Houston, Texas; half-sister and brother-in-law, Mamie and Regis Fortin of Bath, Maine; half-brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Frankie Clay of Virginia Beach, Virginia; four grandchildren, Russell Clay, Roger Clay, Deborah Alker, Denise Johnson; four step-grandchildren, Melanie Courtney, Melissa McCleese, Heather Roberts, David Courtney; four great great-grandchildren, Kayla Alker, Kara Alker, Will Alker, Hannah Buffington, Cailyn Johnson; three step-grandchildren, Will McCleese, Owen McCleese, Preston Roberts, Selah Roberts.
Memorials may be made to the Baptist Children's Village, Post Office Box 27, Clinton, Mississippi 39060, or to Alta Woods Baptist Church.
