

Elizabeth Robbins Smith passed away peacefully on Sunday at her home in Jackson. Elizabeth was 104 years old. She was born in Jackson, Tennessee on April 20, 1912 to Minnie Mae Robbins and William Joseph Robbins.
Elizabeth was the oldest living member of the Jackson High School graduating class of 1930. Following her graduation from Jackson High, Elizabeth married her sweetheart George Arthur Smith, a former mayor of Jackson.
Three sons were born to George and Elizabeth: Robert Joseph Smith, Jack Arthur Smith, and William Jerry Smith.
George and Elizabeth established George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home where Elizabeth played the organ for 25 years. Elizabeth was an active member of First United Methodist Church for 86 years. She served as a Grey Lady at Jackson General Hospital for 36 years and she was an avid bridge player.
Elizabeth is survived by her sons, Jack Arthur Smith and wife, Judy; William Jerry Smith and wife, Ruth Ann; eleven grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, George A. Smith; a son, Dr. Robert J. Smith; her mother and father; her sister, Evelyn Smith; a daughter-in-law, Bettye Fox Smith; daughter-in-law, Helen Chilton Smith; and a granddaughter, Suzanne Smith Hopfer.
There will be a private family committal service on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Ridgecrest Cemetery. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. A memorial service will be held Thursday afternoon, November 3, 2016 at 2 p.m. in the Sanctuary of First United Methodist Church. A visitation and reception will follow the service in Clayton Hall at First United Methodist Church.
The family requests memorials in Mrs. Smith’s memory be directed to First United Methodist Church, West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
