Jonita was born in Bemis, TN to her parents Nannie Stokes Smith and Howard Mabe Smith. She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Fred Everette Teague, Senior who she was married to for 37 years. A graduate of JB Young High School, Jonita worked as a medical transcriptionist at Jackson General Hospital and for the family businesses, Teague Brothers Sand & Gravel and Teague Transports. Known as “Nu Nu” by her five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Jonita was the matriarch of a large and loving family who she was devoted to.
She is survived by her son Fred Everette Teague, Junior and his wife Sandra Yandell Teague of Jackson TN; and her son David Glenn Teague and his wife Cynthia James Teague also of Jackson, TN.
Jonita was a talented artist who love to paint and was famous for baking “Nu Nu bread” and dressing for holiday meals. She also loved turtles and owned a large collection of turtle themed memorabilia. Jonita loved to read, needlework, crossword puzzles and beating her grandchildren in Scrabble or Uno. She was also a long-time member of Englewood Baptist Church but also attended United Methodist Church regularly with her family.
Also surviving Jonita is her brother Paul Herron Smith and his wife Janetta Smith; grandson Fred Everette Teague III, his wife Ashley Louviere Teague with their children Lillian Kathleen Teague and Everette Bond Teague; grandson Nathan Lee Teague; granddaughter Katherine Teague Fowler, her husband Christopher Brice Fowler with their children Elizabeth Ingram Fowler and Katherine James Fowler; grandson William David Teague and his wife Sarah Cox Teague; grandson John Howard Teague; nephew Jason Smith; niece Tiffany McSwain; and niece Tana Fleming.
The family would also like to thank Jonita’s caregivers, for all the devotion and compassion they showed at the end of her life.
A memorial service will be held at 3 pm on Friday, October 1st at First United Methodist Church Chapel in downtown Jackson, TN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or RIFA (backpack ministries).
