

Jack proudly served his country in the United States Navy and retired from military service in 1969. Following his naval career, he worked as a maintenance engineer and later retired from Riverside Hospital and St. Vincent’s Medical Center. Jack had many passions throughout his life. He enjoyed building and carpentry, woodworking, photography, art, and poetry. He also spent much of his life studying religions and was known to find beauty and meaningful lessons in nature. Jack possessed an intelligent mind and a loving heart, and he greatly enjoyed sharing stories with anyone willing to listen. He was a generous supporter of many charitable organizations, with a special place in his heart for Boys Town.
Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Sluus; his stepdaughter, Lillian (Lynn) Carter; and his brother, Joseph Sluus. He is survived by his children, Sherry Chahla of Great Falls, Montana; Gary Sluus of Dallas, Texas; Jacqueline White of Youngstown, Florida; and Robin McCullough (Marvin McCullough) of Jacksonville, Florida. He is also survived by his stepson, Timothy Carter of Inglis, Florida; his sister, Shirley Hollis; as well as extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held at Hardage - Giddens Greenlawn Funeral Home, 4300 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207, US, on March 21, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
A Committal Service will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery, 4300 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207, US, on March 21, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm.
