was born on September 19,1931, in Savannah, Georgia and was the daughter of the late Clarence and Rosa McElveen. While visiting Jacksonville, Florida in 1947 she met and fell in love with her beloved husband of sixty years at the Krystal. Betty was baptized at North Main Street Baptist Church and was a faithful follower of Christ. Betty was a jet setter and traveled to many continents basking in their cultures and making lifelong memories. Betty loved sharing her precious adventures and memories with her grandchildren and inspired them to travel as often as they could.
Betty’s claim to fame was being a devoted wife, loving mother, and the coolest Gaga around. She was the keeper of secrets and the finest confidant. Betty loved being spoiled on her date nights with her son-n-law and grandsons and always hated the night to end. Betty retired from Duval County Public Schools in 1998 as a Bookkeeper at Lola M. Culver Elementary. After retirement she volunteered at Culver and shared her love of reading with the students.
Betty is predeceased by her husband George L. Brantley Jr., daughter Gail Horton, son Chip Brantley and sisters Dorothy Cash and Mary Hoover. She is survived by her daughter Tracey Carroll and a devoted son-n-law James Carroll; Grandchildren Matthew Carroll (Courtney), Andrew Carroll, Danielle Brantley, Rebecca Brantley, and Charles Horton. She is also survived by her great-grand son Leo Matthew Carroll who brought her immense laughter and joy. Sisters Ouida Weems, Sandra Moore and Carolyn McGuire (Harold) and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Our mom and Gaga will be remembered for her sassiness and limitless love for her family. She is being laid to rest on the day that made her the luckiest woman in the world as she would tell it, her Wedding Anniversary. Even though we are heartbroken Betty Jean will be reunited with her husband in their permanent resting place. They didn’t have to promise each other the moon or stars they just promised that they would always be together forever. Their Love Leaves an Indelible Imprint.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 13, 2022, at 11:00 am at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home 1426 Rowe Ave. with Rev. Tim McDaniel officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service from10:00 – 11:00 am.
