Boris was born on January 21, 1935, in Kharkov, Ukraine. A survivor of World War II and the Holocaust, he endured unimaginable hardship with strength, resilience, and courage. In Ukraine, Boris built a successful career as an electrical engineer, admired for his intelligence and skill. After the fall of the Soviet Union, he moved to Jacksonville in 1994 with his wife, Sofiya, and his younger son, Alexander, to begin a new chapter of their lives. Upon arriving in the United States, Boris and Sofiya worked tirelessly to build a future for their family. Boris worked as a custodian at Jacksonville University, and through their dedication and sacrifice, they supported Alexander’s education, enabling him to become a successful civil engineer. They also helped their older son, Michael, and his family when they moved from Ukraine to Jacksonville, providing a strong foundation for their new life in America.
Boris was a talented and resourceful man who didn’t like throwing anything that was broken away and always wanted to fix things and make them work again. He was very orderly and organized, valuing cleanliness, structure, and routine, and these qualities were deeply instilled in his sons. He loved exploring the world, traveling to different countries and going on many cruises with his family. He was a curious and thoughtful person who loved reading, following world events, and learning about history. Boris was passionate about sharing stories from his childhood and his experiences during the war, ensuring that lessons from the past were remembered.
He also followed a healthy diet and enjoyed cooking his own meals daily, even at 90 years old. He remained dedicated to health and fitness throughout his life, maintaining a daily exercise routine and continuing to exercise well into his 90s. He was a proud member of the Jewish Community Alliance (JCA), where he exercised and spent time with friends every day. Above all, Boris cherished time with his family, especially his sons, his three granddaughters, his two great-great-grandchildren, and his sister and her family. Boris was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sofiya, and his son, Alexander. He will be remembered with deep love, admiration, and respect for his strength, generosity, discipline, curiosity, and zest for life.
